Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Nick and Peczuh Lead Brewers Past Bears

ARLINGTON, VA – The Vassar women's basketball team rebounded on Friday night to take a 74-64 win over Ursinus in the opening game of the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament. With the win, Vassar faces host Marymount in the championship game on Saturday night. Junior forward Sophie Nick (Denver, CO) led all scorers with 27 points, hitting nine of her 15 shots while adding 11 rebounds. Junior guard Isa Peczuh (Willington, CT) tacked on 22 points and was five-for-eight from behind the arc.

An early Bears' run gave Ursinus the 12-6 lead in the first quarter, but a layup by Jackie Cenan (Laguna Beach, CA) and then another by Nick chipped the lead to 14-10. Peczuh would make three consecutive three pointers to close the first and put Vassar up 19-18.

The Brewers made a run of their own to start the second. Nick opened with a jumper in the paint, and Cenan tallied a fast break layup. The Bears' Marisa Morano answered with a three to put the score at 23-20. After Sarah Gillooly (Stow, MA) picked up Nick for another layup, the Brewers led 29-25 with 3:31 in the half. Ursinus would make two layups to tie the game soon after, and a jumper by Lydia Konstanzer gave the Bears the lead. Nick made two free throws to break the run, but Maya Kornfeld slipped in a layup in the final seconds to give the Bears a 35-31 advantage at the half.

Vassar and Ursinus went back-and-forth to start the third quarter, but a Peczuh trey settled things down and put Vassar up 40-39. The Bears would chip back in, but a steal from Ryan DeOrio (Collegeville, PA) found its way to Lexi Mousley (Jericho, VT) who picked up Skylar Schmid (Natick, MA) for the easy layup.

The Brewers started the fourth on a 6-0 run, and Vassar took a seven-point lead after DeOrio knocked down a three off a Nick feed. The Bears would cut the lead to six, but a free throw from Maeve Sussman (Needham, MA) and a three-pointer from Nick proved to be the finishing blow.
