POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar College women's volleyball team had its most complete offensive effort of the season on Friday night, and the result was a dominant win. The Brewers (10-6, 2-1 Liberty) got 50 of their 75 points on kills and hit a combined .310 (11 errors, 126 attempts) in a 25-19, 25-19, 25-20 triumph over St. Lawrence (12-7, 0-4 Liberty) at Kenyon Hall.
"I couldn't be prouder of the team," Head Coach
Jonathan Penn said. "They really implemented the game plan that we knew we needed to play in order to be successful against a good St. Lawrence team. We just executed really well tonight."
After St. Lawrence began the match by scoring four of the first five points, the Brewers stormed back to tie it at 8-8 on an
Annie MacMillan (Colorado Springs, CO) service ace. The Saints went back in front 11-9 before a kill by
Jane McLeod (New York, NY) sparked a 10-2 rally that gave Vassar a 19-13 lead. St. Lawrence pulled back within three at 22-19, but two more McLeod kills, Vassar's 17th and 18th of the set, closed out a 25-19 win for the Brewers. Vassar hit .348 (18-2-46) as a team in the opening stanza.
Vassar took an early 6-4 lead in the second set before St. Lawrence rallied to go up 10-9.
Devan Gallagher (San Francisco, CA) responded with a kill, however, igniting an 11-2 Vassar spurt that gave the Brewers a 20-12 advantage. After the Saints cut their deficit to four at 22-18, Gallagher ended the set by slamming kills on three of the final four points. The Brewers had 17 total kills in the frame, and took a 2-0 lead in the match with the 25-19 set win.
In the third set, there were nine ties and five lead changes, as the teams traded scoring runs. Midway through the period, Vassar used a 4-0 spurt to turn a 13-11 deficit into a 15-13 advantage. St. Lawrence claimed the next two points to tie the score before Gallagher rattled off three kills during a 7-3 run that put the Brewers in front 22-18. MacMillan was credited with a kill that brought Vassar to match point, and the Brewers closed out the sweep by taking the final set, 25-20.
Three different Brewers finished with double-digit kills while hitting better than .300. Gallagher led the way with a season-high 19 kills on .366 hitting. She added 11 digs for her 10th double-double of the season. McLeod ended up one dig shy of a double-double, tallying 13 kills and nine digs while hitting .400.
Sara Ehnstrom (Kaneohe, HI), meanwhile, hit .333 with 13 kills and three blocks.
"We were very efficient," Penn said. "Our pin hitters just made really, really good decisions. They were patient when they needed to be patient, and they took advantage when the advantage was there to be had."
MacMillan posted a double-double with 40 assists and 15 digs, while
Anna Zucchero (Newton, MA) added 15 digs of her own. As a team, Vassar outdug St. Lawrence 66-50.
Natalie Piper had a double-double for St. Lawrence. She finished with 10 kills and 12 digs. Grace Kelly also tallied 10 kills, while Maddy Bishop registered 14 assists and nine digs. Reagan Collier-Hogan contributed a team-high 13 digs for the Saints, who hit .148 (31-14-115) as a team.
On Saturday, Vassar continues its five-match homestand with a 2 p.m. showdown against Clarkson (9-7, 2-2 Liberty). It will be the first meeting between the teams since last season's Liberty League semifinals, when the Golden Knights defeated the Brewers in four sets.
