CANTON, N.Y. – Two first-half goals by St. Lawrence (9-2-2, 5-1-1 Liberty) kept the visiting Vassar men's soccer team (8-4-0, 4-2-0 Liberty) at bay, with the home team pulling off the 3-1 win on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Brewers to 4-2 in the conference as St. Lawrence now is tied for first with Hobart.
The Brewers' offense struggled in the first half, and the team did not record a shot for the first 22 minutes of play. In comparison, the Saints took five shots in the opening 19 minutes and connected for the goal at 19:53. Charlton Kelly knocked in the one timer off a Raphael Zoccolaro assist. Vassar attempted to answer soon after when
Andrew Goldsmith (Princeton, NJ) and
Toby Stansell (Seattle, WA) fired two shots on goal, but couldn't slip any past the Saints' defense.
Late in the first, Tapshak Augustine connected with Kelly on a long feed where he netted the top shelf goal at 39:52.
The second half saw Vassar pick up the tempo when
Mattie Mrlik (San Francisco, CA) hit the cross bar at the 53
rd minute, but the Brewers were unable to cut the lead. The Saints scored their third goal of the game when Augustine received the ball on a cross from Aidan Callahan and made the low shot.
Vassar managed eight shots along with three corner attempts in the second, and finally broke through at the 86
th minute with a
Jonathan Bow (San Francisco, CA) score. Bow took the pass from Mrlik and made a quick tip inside the box for the final score of the game.
The Brewers return to action next Saturday for their senior day against Hobart. Game is set to start at 2 p.m.
