Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late Fourth Quarter Comeback Falls Short at St. Lawrence

CANTON, NY (January 26, 2018) – The Vassar women's basketball traveled up north for their first game of the weekend, falling to the Saints of St. Lawrence, 58-52, on Friday night.

Sophie Nick led all scorers on the night with 17 points, 11 of which came in the second half. The sophomore also grabbed eight rebounds and had a block and a steal against the Saints. Ariella Rosenthal had a nice game herself with 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Nicole Teta chipped in eight points and Samarah Cook added seven on the night.

One of the Brewers strength, the three-point shot, was not on their side tonight. Vassar went 3-13 on their three-point attempts tonight. All in all they shot 37.3% from the floor (22-59). On the other hand, St. Lawrence was 5-9 on their shots from deep and was 43.8% in total.

Vassar took the early lead in the first quarter, closing the opening frame with a 13-9 lead. The Saints quickly tied the ball game at 13-13 just two minutes into the second quarter. St. Lawrence took the lead after that, going up by seven at the 3:06 mark. Nick's layup and two three-balls from Teta helped close the gap before halftime, making it a three point game heading into the locker room.

Cook tied the game at 29-29 midway through the third frame and Teta put the Brewers up by two on the next possession. But the Saints were able to grab the lead back and build a five point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

In the final period, St. Lawrence managed to run up their lead to as much as eight before the Brewers mounted a comeback. Vassar put together a 10-3 run over nearly five minutes of game action get within one of the home team. Nick's layup started the run, followed by a Cook three-pointer, a Rosenthal layup, and three-point play by Nick. She muscled through a foul to knock down the layup and converted at the line to bring the score within one.

But as the Saints regained momentum, they extended their lead to stay out of reach of the charging Brewers. Vassar was forced to foul to extend the game and St. Lawrence went 8-6 from the free throw line in the closing seconds to take home the win.

The Brewers dropped to 6-4 in conference play, but have a chance to get back on track tomorrow afternoon when they visit Clarkson at 2:00 p.m.
