Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late Surge From Saints Tops Brewers in Canton

CANTON, NY (January 26, 2018) – The Vassar men's basketball team dropped to 4-6 in conference play after dropping a 78-80 decision at St. Lawrence on Friday night.

Jesse Browne led all scorers with 21 points on the night, while Paul Grinde recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Hunter Gettings came off the bench to knock down nine points and dished out a team-high six assists.

The Brewers shot the ball well against the Saints, shooting at a 0.484 clip for the night. And from deep, Vassar connected on 12 of 28 tries. The one shooting stat that was up to par on the night was at the free-throw line where they hit just 6-14 shots.

Vassar got their first lead of the game at the 14:36 mark in the first half when they led 13-12. Freshman BJ White nailed a trifecta to put the Brewers up by one. Midway through the half, the game was tied at 20-20 until Grinde hit a jumper to put
Vassar up two. The lead was tied twice more before the halftime buzzer, and the Saints grabbed the lead with 90 seconds to go. Gettings knocked down both of his triples down the stretch to give the Brewers a four-point halftime lead.

The Brewers kept their momentum going into the second half, running up their lead to 15 with 11 minutes to go. But the Saints began their run and slowly crept their way back into the game.

With the lead at 10, St. Lawrence put together a 10-1 scoring run over a five-minute span that pit the score at 65-64 with 5:41 on the clock. The Brewers still had the lead, but the Saints had all the momentum. Browne chipped in a three to stop the run and bring Vassar's lead back up to four.

Two minutes later, Alex Seff hit a free throw, just one of his seven points of the night, to bring the Vassar lead up to five. But a quick 6-0 run from the Saints had them on top with under three minutes to play. The Brewers kept the game within a single possession the rest of the way, but were unable to get back on top.

Vassar faces off with Clarkson tomorrow in Potsdam for more Liberty League action at 4:00 p.m.
