SCHENECTADY, NY (January 19, 2018) – The Vassar men's basketball team fell short at Union on Friday night, dropping an 80-61 decision to the Dutchmen.
Four Brewers scored in double figures led by freshman
Zach Bromfeld who tallied 14 points.
Jesse Browne and
Alex Seff each had 11 points for Vassar, while
Paul Grinde chipped in 10. Seff led the team dishing out assists and Grinde hauled in seven boards for the Vassar team-high.
The first five minutes were back and forth with Vassar owning a slight 6-4 advantage at the 15:01 mark in the first half. Union gained back the lead and pushed it to 12 points with under 90 seconds to go before halftime. BJ White knocked down a three to cut the lead to nine, but a Dutchmen layup brought it to 11 before the halftime buzzer.
An 11-4 scoring run by the Brewers had them within four just six minutes into the second stanza. Seff started the run with a layup after he made the steal on the other end. Tebay and Seff then got back-to-back fast break layups to keep the run going. A Grinde jumper and a Browne triple capped the Brewer run and Union took back momentum.
Union led by as many as 21 before Bromfeld's layup ended the game. Kevin Weckworth led the Dutchmen with 23 points as Greg King recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards.
The Brewers shot 41.7% from the field including 31.3% from three-point range. At the free-throw line, Vassar converted 59.3% of their attempts (16-27).
