Men's Soccer Suffers First Loss in Overtime at Manhattanville

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 6, 2017) – The Vassar College men's soccer team dropped its first game of the season with a 2-1 loss at Manhattanville on Wednesday evening.

The two sides were fairly even in stats as Vassar only outshot the Valiants by 1, 11-10, and each team got five shots on goal. Will Marment had three saves in net and Tim Carsting had four for Manhattanville.

Both teams notched a goal in the first half, with the Brewers getting on the board first. Vassar's senior captain, Hayden Van Brewer lined up a free kick 25 yards out and buried it to put his side up 1-0.

Less than two minutes later, Oskar Martinsson tied the game for the Valiants. Jon Kyriakidis crossed a ball in that connected with Martinsson who volleyed it into the back of the net.

That tie would hold through halftime and through the second 45 minutes of play. In overtime, the same two Manhattanville players would team up again, this time for the game-winner. This time it was Martinsson that headed the ball into the box for Kyriakidis who knocked it past Matt Marcelino for the goal. The score came just six minutes into the first extra time period.

Tyler Gilmore, Andrew Goldsmith, Van Brewer, and Mattie Mrlik all fired off two shots including at least one on target.

For their next match, the Brewers stay on the road and head to Hoboken, New Jersey for a meeting with Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
