POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 29, 2017) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team hit .373 Friday evening in non-conference action against Western Connecticut State University, earning a straight-set victory to up VC's win streak to four matches in play from Kenyon Hall. Vassar picked up the win with scores of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-13.
The opening set was close through the early going, as both teams were getting offensive production from its big hitting options. With the score tied at seven apiece, the Brewers (12-3) went on a 7-0 run behind the serving of
Annie MacMillan to take a 14-7 lead. During the stretch, junior
Devan Gallagher helped out with three kills as well.
The lead in the first set would stay around seven points until Vassar finished the game on a 4-1 run capped with a kill from Gallagher to take the early lead. Vassar posted 14 kills in the first set, hitting .303 for the game. The second set would was 13-12 through the first 25 points, but the Brewers rattled off eight of the next 10 points to take a commanding lead. VC clinched the set thanks to a kill from sophomore
Jane McLeod, which was her seventh of the match.
In the third set, Vassar attacked at a .478 clip as sophomore
Colette Cambey posted three terminations to lead all VC hitters in the third set. The Brewers also forced the Colonials (4-11) into -.042 attacking rate in the stanza to seal the three-game victory. The win was Vassar's second four-match winning streak of the season, as the Brewers earned six straight from September 6 to September 16. VC has earned 10 of its last 11 matches as well.
Gallagher finished with an efficient stat line on Friday evening, leading VC with eight kills on 14 attempts, adding five digs and three aces. The kill and total attack numbers for a three-set match were Gallagher's lowest of the season, as she now sits 71 kills shy of 1,000 for her career.
Junior setter
Annie MacMillan moved the ball around well, as five different hitters took 10 or more swings with no one attacking more than 16 times. MacMillan posted 30 assists and five service aces, both team highs, while Cambey finished with seven terminations on 16 swings.
The attacking balance continued as McLeod posted seven terminations on just 10 attacks to hit .600, while senior
Bria Corham chalked up six finishes on 12 attempts. Junior
Lauren Ninkovich paced the Brewer defense with a team-high eight digs, and freshman
Anna Zucchero tallied seven defensive saves as well.
Junior Kamari King totaled a match-high nine kills for Western Connecticut State, while teammate Nicolina Chenard added six successful attacks to go with three digs. Freshman Ali Brochu combined a team-best two service aces with five kills, and Jenna Pisano contributed with a team-best seven digs.
The Brewers will now turn their attention to a pair of matches in Kenyon Hall on Saturday, battling Nazareth College (10-4) at 10 a.m. before finishing the day with a 4 p.m. tilt against SUNY Geneseo (11-4). WCSU will battle both the Knights and Golden Flyers at noon and 2 p.m., respectively, in more Vassar Quad Match play.
