Vassar Men's Soccer Match Notes - Union

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 28, 2017) – After blanking Bard College on Wednesday, the Vassar College men's soccer team now lead the Liberty League with a record of 2-0. They will look to continue their winning streak on the road this Saturday when they take on Union College.

A Look At The Brewers (5-3-1, 2-0 Liberty League)
  • With the last win over Bard, the Brewers move into the number one spot of the league table.
  • Scoring his third goal of the season, senior Jose Novas has now tallied a goal in the last two matches and is currently tied for second on the team in total points (9).
  • Senior Hayden Van Brewer continues to play a crucial offensive role, scoring four goals and helping two more for a total of ten points this season.
  • Relentlessly running along the sideline, sophomore Henrik Olsson's assist to Novas on Wednesday again demonstrates his qualities on both sides of the ball.
  • The Vassar offense continues their selfless play style, with assists (15) coming from nearly every scored goal.
  • Although having trouble on the road this season, the Brewers remain undefeated at home with a record of 3-0-1.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Will Marment made three stops and numerous quality distributions on his way to earning his first shutout this season against Bard.
  • Individually, Marment's save percentage ranks him third in the league in the category.
 
A Look At The Dutchmen (7-1-1, 0-1-1 Liberty League)
  • After winning all of their pre-conference games, the Dutchmen have faced a tough Liberty League opening schedule, taking on last year's conference finalists Skidmore and then St. Lawrence.
  • Leading their offense is Salvador Lopez Jr. with four goals and two assists on the season
  • Although in a four-way tie in league for goals scored (15), the Dutchmen have only assisted just over than half (8).
  • Contributing to four of these assists are Salvador Lopez Jr. and Kienan Smith with two a piece
  • Currently Union is tied with Skidmore for the least number of goals conceded, letting in only five on the season
  • Keeper Jonathan Weitzman currently leads the league in save percentage (0.902) and total saves (46)
  • Weitzman also currently leads the league and nation in total shutouts.
 
Against Union All-Time: The Brewers are 11-15-4 all time against the Dutchmen. In the last six seasons however, Vassar has had the upper hand, going 4-1-1.

Up Next: In a repeat of last year's Liberty League finals, the Brewers will take on Skidmore College at home on Saturday, October 7th at 2:00 p.m.
