ONEONTA, NY (September 27, 2017) – In what was the longest field hockey game in Vassar College field hockey history, the Brewers dropped a 3-2 overtime non-league game at Hartwick College in action from Wright Stadium Wednesday afternoon.
The game was only the fifth double-overtime game for the Brewers since the 2000, and the first since the 2010 campaign. Vassar had never played in a shootout before Wednesday night, and it turned out to be an epic one at that, as both teams needed 12 shooters before Hartwick's Bella Wheeler scored in the second round of sudden death after both teams were tied after the opening 11 attempts to win it.
The Brewers wasted no time getting on the board in the opening period, as VC tallied on its opening shot of the game just 67 seconds into the contest. Senior
Storm Sideleau helped set up the goal, as she carried the ball down the right sideline before crossing it to freshman
Dara Studnitzer, who knocked the cross into the back of the cage for the early 1-0 lead.
That's where the score would remain until 30:55 of the contest when the host Hawks (7-2) got on the board on a penalty corner, as Gina Cozetti scored off a pass from Tegan Robinson. Hartwick continued to pressure but Vassar keeper
Liz Rotolo made two saves in the waning moments of the first half to keep it tied at one at the break.
Vassar once again jumped right back on top early in the stanza, as Studnitzer again tallied off of a rebound of her own shot at 39:16 to make the score 2-1. It was the third career goal for Studnitzer, and her first multi-goal game of her career. VC would hold its one-goal edge for just over five minutes, as Marissa Downes scored on another penalty corner to even the game at two apiece.
VC would dominate the rest of regulation though, taking the last 10 shots of the second half while earning six penalty corners but couldn't beat Allyson Osborne again as the game went to overtime. In the first overtime period, both teams had opportunities, but the goalkeepers combined to make six saves to send it to another 15-minute extra session.
In the second overtime, Vassar (6-3) earned three more penalty corners to up their total to 22 for the game but couldn't earn the game-winner as the game went to a shootout. In the first five rounds of the shootout, junior
Alyssa More, Sideleau and junior
Molly Youse all scored and Rotolo made two saves but Brooke Singer scored in round five to keep the action going.
In the second round of attempts, all five shooters for each team were able to score to send the shootouts to sudden-death chances. In round 11, both More and Maria Stalder of Hartwick were denied. In the final round, Vassar's attempt was thwarted, setting up Wheeler and her heroics as she potted a shot under Rotolo to earn the win for Hartwick.
VC finished with a 29-17 shot lead for the contest, while posting a 22-10 edge in penalty corners. VC sophomore
Cristina Lopez led all Brewer players with seven shots, while junior
Megan Caveny was held off the scoreboard for the first time in six games as she fired six shots. Osborne finished with 14 saves for Hartwick, and Rotolo added eight stops in cage for VC.
The Brewers will jump back in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m., taking on the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY.
