POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 23, 2017) – Vassar College women's volleyball team knocked off Ithaca College in Kenyon Hall in their second Liberty League contest of the season, 25-23, 25-23, 14-25, 25-21.
In the first set, the Brewers (10-3, 2-0 Liberty) set the tone of the match with a kill by
Devan Gallagher straight through the seam of the block to start the match. As a team, the Brewers were offensively dominant hitting a team percentage of .424 with junior
Devan Gallagher earning six kills and sophomore Jane Mcleod finishing the set with five terminations. The Brewer defense led by
Anna Zucchero contributed immensely by holding Ithaca College to a team hitting percentage of .139 and receiving the serve in system for the Brewers.
The second set, Ithaca College (7-5, 1-1 Liberty) came back with a vengeance earning the first three points with back-to-back kills by Joelle Goldstein. Fighting back the Brewers caught up to the Bombers with a kill by
Bria Corham at 9-9. From that moment on both teams stayed within two points of each other. Both teams were battling each other for every point, forcing each other into longer and longer points.
Colette Cambey stayed strong up at net, earning two assisted blocks in the set.
Jane McLeod also chalking up the final two points with back-to-back kills, finishing the set for the Brewers 25-23.
In the third set, Ithaca College took control of the offensive pressure earning 13 kills while Vassar finished the set off with 10 kills and 7 errors. The Brewers went down by five points and were not able to find their rhythm after that. The set ended with a score of 14-25.
In the final set, Vassar College was trailing by two points until junior
Lauren Ninkovich changed the tone of the set by putting more service pressure on Ithaca, forcing them out of system and earning an ace of her own. With this change of momentum, the Brewers continued to put pressure on the Bomber defense, commanding the set 20-13. Ithaca College responded earning some points of their own but Vassar finished the match with five kills coming from
Jane McLeod,
Colette Cambey and
Devan Gallagher.
Vassar earned the win because with their offensive pressure, determination and strategic shot selection.
Annie MacMillan led the team in assists with 42 on the match and earned an ace in the match. Gallagher finished the game with a double-double, leading the team in both kills (21) and digs (17).
Jane McLeod added 19 kills of her own. The defensive effort from the Brewers pushed them to victory with
Lauren Ninkovich earning 15 digs and
Anna Zucchero finishing the match with 11.
Vassar College will travel south to Hoboken, NJ to play a non-conference match against Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday, September 27 at 7 p.m. in Canavan Arena.
