WILLIAMSTOWN, MA (September 22, 2017) – The Vassar College men's tennis team traveled to the Berkshires Friday afternoon to take on one of Division III's top men's tennis teams in Williams College, falling 9-0 in non-conference fall action from Hunt Courts.
The Brewers (2-1) showed energy throughout the match, and had spurts that VC will be able to take away from the loss despite the final score. In doubles, Vassar dropped the first match at No. 2 doubles, as freshman
David Gandham and junior
Nick Zuczek fell to Benjamin Lebowitz and Arturo Kam, 8-2. Williams doubled its lead to 2-0 at No. 3 doubles, as sophomore
Allen Sokolov and
Nicolas Demaria also were defeated 8-2.
At the top doubles position, freshman
Adam Krueger and sophomore
Jeremy Auh played a spirited match with one of the best doubles teams in the nation in Alex Taylor and Brian Grodecki. The Williams duo, who were each was All-Americans last year, were tested by the Brewer No. 1 pairing before earning an 8-3 win to sweep doubles.
In singles, the Ephs controlled most of the action in earning the 9-0 win. At No. 2, Krueger continued to show that he could be a huge addition for Vassar this season, as he battled with Sachin Raghavan to a 6-2, 6-3 decision in a match that was closer than the score line.
At No. 1 singles, the best match of the day was on hand, as Sokolov and Grodecki squared off in the final outing to finish. Grodecki took the opening set 6-2, but the Woodland Hills, CA product for the Brewers stayed right with the Eph No. 1 player in the second set, forcing a breaker. In the tie-break, Grodecki was able to pull away for a 7-4 win but it was a strong outing for Vassar's first No. 1 not named
Nick Litsky in three seasons.
The young Brewer squad, without a senior on the team in 2017-18, will now look to put some of its experience gained Friday to use next week at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regionals. VC will head to Skidmore College for the three-day tournament starting on Saturday, September 30 at 9 a.m. in Saratoga Springs, NY.
