Brewer Women’s Volleyball Knocks off Coast Guard, Falls To Rochester At Red Dragon Classic

CORTLAND, NY (September 2, 2017) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team finished action at the 2017 Red Dragon Classic Saturday afternoon, splitting the day's festivities after defeating Coast Guard Academy in three sets and falling to the University of Rochester in three games as well.

Once again led by junior Devan Gallagher, the Brewers were able to take down Coast Guard Academy with scores of 25-19, 25-17 and 25-23. Vassar hit .321 for the match, as Gallagher led all hitters with 24 kills on 52 attempts. Gallagher also posted her second double-double of the weekend in the victory, as she added 12 digs.

Vassar also got 10 kills from sophomore Jane McLeod, as she hit .333 on 24 swings, and junior Lauren Ninkovich posted a match-best 16 digs as well as five kills. Fellow junior Annie MacMillan dished out 42 assists to go with 10 digs, as Jorden Schreeder and Anna Zucchero finished with 12 and 10 digs, respectively. Sophomore Colette Cambey posted four kills and four total blocks.

Rochester 3, Vassar 0
The Brewers hit a solid .218 against the Yellowjackets in the final match of the weekend, but couldn't stop the Rochester offense as VC fell 25-20, 25-20 and 28-26. Gallagher had a match-best 19 terminations for the Brewers, as she also posted a career-best 17 digs for the Brewers. The junior finished the weekend with three double-doubles, which were the first three of her career at Vassar.

For the four matches at Cortland, Gallagher finished with 84 total kills, averaging 6.00 per set while hitting .303. Zucchero finished with a team-best 18 digs, which set a new career high, and McLeod added 11 kills and seven digs. MacMillan handed out 36 helpers along with tallying eight digs, and Ninkovich finished with 11 digs as well for VC. Sophomore Jennifer Kerbs posted five kills on eight attempts, adding two assisted blocks for VC.

The Brewers will open their home slate on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. in Kenyon Hall, hosting Williams College (0-0) for non-conference play.
