Olsson's Goal Sends Brewers Over Hawks

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 13, 2017) -  Sophomore defender Henrik Olsson's goal in the 77th minute stopped the Vassar men's soccer team's losing streak at two games. The Brewers picked up a 3-2 win at New Paltz on Wednesday evening.

The Hawks got out to an early lead, but it was Vassar who finished with three unanswered goals to grab their first road victory of the season. New Paltz controlled the pace of play in the first 45 minutes, only allowing four Brewer shots while capitalizing on two of their own six shots.

In the eighth minute, Luke Dole crossed the ball into the box and Kevin Doorley won the scramble for the ball and knocked it in for the first Hawks goal. Doorley recorded an assist on the second goal of the night when he placed a corner kick on the head of Aleco Podias. The score put the home side up 2-0 just 27 minutes into the action.

Vassar trailed by two at the half, but came out determined and firing on all cylinders in the second half. The Brewers managed 12 shots in the final 45 minutes while only allowing three for New Paltz.

Mattie Mrlik got Vassar on the board in the 54th minute when Jose Novas sent in a cross to Mrlik at the 18-yard line and finished with a goal to the near side. The sophomore wasn't done scoring though, as he tied the game about five minutes later. Kevin Baliat found Mrlik in a similar spot and this time he shot over the goalie for the game-tying goal.

The game remained tied for about 20 minutes more before Olsson was the hero of the day. Tyler Gilmore aimed a header at the goal that was blocked by the New Paltz defense, but collected by Olsson and knocked in for the go-ahead goal. The Brewers would remain in control for the final 13 minutes of the contest to earn the victory over the local rival.

Senior goalkeeper Matt Marcelino earned the start in net and played the full time, facing nine shots and making four saves in the win.

The Brewers return home for the first time in two weeks, when they host Oneonta on Saturday at noon on Gordon Field.
