POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 29, 2017)- For the first time in program history, the Vassar College Brewers defeated the Union College Dutchmen in a formidable 20-10 win, inside Gordon Field Saturday afternoon.
The Brewers improve to 4-3 while the Dutchmen fall to 3-4 with their first loss since April 15. This season marks the most wins in a season for the Brewers, the highest winning percentage in a season by the team and the first time in program history being nationally ranked.
10 seniors were honored in a ceremony prior to the start of the game. These seniors are among the largest class to date in program history and were instrumental in Vassar's success today with four finding the back of the net.
Sam Houston-Read scored a game high of five goals while
Chris Billups, Michael Mullin,
James Thomas and Matthew Lowrey notched two.
Brandon DeStasio, Drew Adams,
Alex Georgalas,
Liam Moriarty and
Austin Mello all connected with one goal each.
Brandon Klein lead defensively with four ground balls while
Austin Haymes, Moriarty, Matthew Boyd, and Mullen scooped up two loose balls.
Goalkeeper
Matt Boyd earned the win with 19 saves, while Jack Santilli and Sam Bebout split the loss, as the Brewers outshot the Dutchmen, 46-44.
The Brewers were first to strike with a Billups goal in just over three minutes of play though the Dutchmen responded with two goals to take the lead. Mullin connected with an equalizer off a feed from Christopher Koester. Union found the back of the net again to regain the lead. Three minutes passed before Houston-Read tied the game again.
The Brewers and Dutchmen would go point-for-point until late in the second quarter when the Brewers tied the match for the fourth time and began a six-point run to enter halftime with a 11-6 lead.
Upon resuming play, the Brewers extended their lead with a 4-2 run. In the final quarter it appeared that the Ducthmen had lost their defensive composure, which made way for five more Brewer goals.
With the win, the Vassar men's lacrosse team enters the quest to the Liberty League Championship as the No.3 seed. The Brewers will face off on Friday, May 5 at a site and time that is too be determined.
