SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (April 21, 2017) – Skidmore College scored 11 goals in the first half, using that to knock off the Vassar College women's lacrosse team Friday evening 19-5 in Liberty League play from Wachenheim Field in Saratoga Springs.
The Thoroughbreds (9-5, 5-2 Liberty) scored first on a free position shot from Tyler Phillips, but Vassar (6-6, 3-3 Liberty) answered back four minutes later on a beautiful goal from
Fiona MacLeod on a nice dish from freshman
Tessa Waters.
Skidmore would net back-to-back goals at 17:59 and 17:46 to make the score 3-1, but the Brewers got one back as
Kelly Pushie finished a diving effort with help from senior
Julia Trudell to make it a one-goal lead for Skidmore. After another two scores from the hosts, Pushie tallied a man-up goal from
Amelia Rivoir to make the score 5-3 with 12:28 to go.
From that point though, Skidmore rattled off the final six goals of the half, three of the free position variety, to take a 11-3 into the break. Vassar opened the scoring in the second half on a tally from
Storm Sideleau, who fed
Adele MacEwen for a goal minutes later to make the score 12-5, but the Thoroughbreds were too much in the end for the Brewers.
The Brewers were outshot on the day 48-17, though Vassar and Skidmore each had 13 draw controls apiece. The big stat was Skidmore's ability to cause turnovers, as Vassar gave the ball away 25 times on the day to just 11 from the hosts. Also, VC was 0-for-2 on free position attempts, while Skidmore tallied on six of its 10 attempts from the arc.
In addition to her two goals, Pushie fired four shots to lead the way in that category for Vassar. Sideleau added three shots and a draw control, while MacLeod posted two ground balls and three caused turnovers as well. Trudell finished with three draw controls, and Waters also posted two ground balls, two caused turnovers and two draw controls. Junior
Emily Chancey stopped 16 shots in net for Vassar.
Skidmore was paced by Phillips, who scored seven goals while adding three caused turnovers. Cas Szwajkowski posted four goals, an assist and 14 shots, and Natalie LaBeau finished with three goals, five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Rachel Talanian also added five ground balls, five draw controls and four caused turnovers in the win. Megan Kolopsky played all 60 minutes in the win, making five stops.
Vassar will be right back at it tomorrow afternoon, taking on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 2 p.m. in Troy, NY in another road Liberty League tussle.
