Vassar Men’s Tennis Match Notes – No. 39 TCNJ

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 2, 2017) – Following Saturday's thrilling 5-4 defeat of the University of Rochester, the Vassar College men's tennis team will hit the road to take on the Lions of The College of New Jersey in action from Ewing, NJ on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Last Time Out: Vassar scored one of its signature wins of the last few seasons last Saturday at home in Walker Field House, as the Brewers erased a 4-0 deficit to come back and earn a 5-4 win after an Alexander Luckmann three-set win. Vassar dropped all three doubles matches, but responded with wins in five of the six singles matches to claim victory.
 
A Look At The Brewers (5-2):
 
  • The Brewers will need to be on their game this weekend, as VC takes on another regionally ranked team in TCNJ.
  • So far this season, VC has been strong in singles but is still trying to figure out the doubles game. Vassar is winning 65.4 percent of its singles affairs, but is at just 52.2 percent in doubles.
  • Senior Nick Litsky is playing like the regionally-ranked player that he is, as the No. 1 player for VC sports an 8-3 record this season including a 5-2 mark at No. 1.
  • Fellow senior Juan Felipe Laso is also playing well, as he is 7-2 this year in singles, sporting a 6-1 record in dual matches.
  • Sophomore Jamie Anderson has seized a starting position this year, and has played well, going 3-1 in conference play and 5-2 in dual matches.
  • Anderson has been strong in doubles as well, as his 4-1 record in doubles is the best on the team. He is also tied with three other players with a team-high four victories in doubles.
  • The No. 3 position for Vassar has been a strength this season, going 6-1 in dual matches at the spot, the best winning percentage of any flight in the order.
  • Statistically, the Brewers' best doubles pair this season has been Anderson and Laso, who are 3-1 together this year.
  • Last season, Vassar dropped a 6-3 decision to TCNJ in Poughkeepsie. The Lions have taken the past two meetings in fact.
 
A Look At The Lions (1-0):
 
  • The Lions of TCNJ opened their spring season Wednesday afternoon, knocking off Chestnut Hill 6-3 in action from the Student Recreation Center.
  • Sophomore Mitchell Sanders knocked off his opponent at No. 1 singles with a score of 6-3, 6-1. On the season, Sanders is now 4-0 in singles action.
  • Fellow sophomore Omar Bokhari pulled out a three-set win at No. 3 singles for the Lions, moving to 3-1 on the season.
  • The College of New Jersey won five of the six singles matches played on Wednesday, dropping No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
  • The doubles teams for TCNJ have struggled at times this year, going 2-10 on the season cumulatively.
  • In contrast, the Lions' singles play has been fairly strong, winning nearly 60 percent of their matches on the season. Wednesday was the team's first dual match of the season, playing in three tournaments in the fall.
  • TCNJ is currently ranked No. 13 in the Northeast Region, and No. 39 in the National Rankings according to the ITA.
 
Up Next: Vassar will head out West for its next six matches, starting the California swing on Monday, March 13 at Claremont-Mudd-Scripts against Trinity College (CT) at 9 a.m. PST. VC will then play Case Western Reserve University later that afternoon at 1:00 PM PST at Pomona College.
