ENGLEWOOD, FL (March 12, 2017) — The Vassar College women's lacrosse team (2-0) saw a strong start slip away in an 18-9 loss to Stevenson University (3-3) at Dever Park on Sunday.
Tessa Waters was productive across the board for the Brewers, leading the team with a hat trick and four draw controls to go along with two created turnovers. Fiona MacLeod added a pair of goals, while Brittany Botticelli, Hannah Cho, Kelly Pushie and Storm Sideleau each tallied one. Olivia O'Loughlin dished out the only assist for the Brewers, also winning two draw controls and grabbing a ground ball.
Kristin Caolo took the loss for VC, making seven saves over the first 44 minutes before Emily Chancey took over to make three saves over the final 16. Meanwhile, Mack Ferguson earned the win for SU, fending away nine shots over the full time, as the Mustangs outshot the Brewers 32-28 overall and 28-18 in shots-on-goal.
Olivia Monterio logged six points on four goals and two assists; Kiely Bunce totaled five points on four scores and a helper; Mackenzie Reese notched a hat trick; and Mallory Davila registered three points on two goals and an assist to round out Stevenson's offensive leaders.
Playing in the first game of their Florida spring break trip, the Brewers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, thanks to goals from Waters, Sideleau and Pushie. Waters secured her score with a pass from O'Loughlin, while Sideleau and Pushie found the back of the net on free position kicks, 3-0.
Stevenson strung together eight straight scores, with Bunce netting four of them, to take an 8-3 advantage with 23 seconds remaining in the first half before Vassar connected on another trifecta of goals. Waters secured her second goal of the game in between scores from MacLeod, as the Brewers trimmed the deficit to as little as 8-6 early in the second stanza.
The Mustangs flipped the switch once more, outscoring the Brewers 10-3 the rest of the way. Waters secured the hat trick on her own to halt a 4-0 run at the 16:07 mark, 12-7; Cho scored one of her own to pause a 2-0 run at the 5:53 mark, 14-8; and Botticelli stopped a 3-0 run with a free position shot at the 1:47 mark, 17-9.
Monteiro concluded scoring for good with her fourth goal of the night with three seconads remaining, as Stevenson won its second in a row.
The Brewers continue their spring break trip with a game against the University of New England at Ross Park in Port Charlotte, FL on Tuesday, March 14 at 12:30 p.m. The Nor'easters are 3-1, most recently besting Southern Maine on Thursday, 18-9.
