SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (February 18, 2017) – A day after earning a 9-0 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology, the Vassar College men's tennis team trekked north to take on No. 21 Skidmore College in Liberty League action Saturday from Wilton YMCA in Saratoga, NY. Unfortunately, the Brewers couldn't get much going in falling to the Thoroughbreds 9-0.
Vassar (4-2, 3-1 Liberty League) lagged behind early, as freshmen
Allen Sokolov and
Jeremy Auh were topped at No. 2 doubles by Kai Yuen Leung and John Wynne 8-1. Skidmore (3-0, 3-0 Liberty League) took a 2-0 advantage moments later, as Travis Leaf and Ted Berkowitz defeated the No. 3 pairing for Vassar of sophomore
Jamie Anderson and senior
Juan Felipe Laso, 8-1.
The final point of doubles was much closer, as seniors
Alexander Luckmann and
Nick Litsky tested another senior pair in Steven Koulouris and Lucas Pickering. In the end though, Skidmore was able to sweep doubles with an 8-5 win at the No. 1 position.
In single's play, Wynne would give his team a 4-0 lead at No. 4, topping Anderson 6-0, 6-3, and Koulouris clinched the match for Skidmore at No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Sokolov. At No. 3, Laso battled Pickering but couldn't come up with the win, falling 6-3, 6-1, and VC freshman
Dom Demeterfi was bested at No. 6 to Jack McClaren 6-1, 6-0.
The best match of the day came at the top spot, as Leung and Litsky renewed their rivalry from the last three seasons. Leung picked up the first set 7-5, and the second set was on serve at 6-5 but Leung was able to break Litsky in the final game to chalk up the victory with the second set score of 7-5. The final match came at No. 5 singles, as Auh came up short to Berkowitz 6-4, 6-0.
The Brewers will return home next weekend to take on the University of Rochester at 9 a.m. in non-conference play from Walker Field House.
