WASHINGTON, D.C. (December 29, 2017) – The Vassar women's basketball team was back on the courts after a 27 day lay-off since their last contest. The Brewers faced No. 24 Marymount in the opening round of the Jamie Lynn Roberts – Fairfield Inn Holiday Tournament hosted by Catholic University on Friday afternoon, falling by a score of 59-72.
Sophomore
Sophie Nick led the way on offense with 23 points and eight boards.
Ariella Rosenthal and
Nicole Teta each contributed 11 points, while
Samarah Cook dished out a team-high five rebounds.
The Brewers jumped out to an early lead that held through most of the first period and even held a seven point advantage early in the game. Early on it was Rosenthal who contributed five quick points for VC. But with 35 seconds left to play in the frame, Marymount tied the score at 12 and eventually took the lead on a jumper before the buzzer.
The Saints gained control of the game in the second 10 minutes as they outscored Vassar 16-8 in the frame to go up by 10 heading into halftime (30-20).
In the third quarter, the Brewers mounted their comeback led by Nick. The sophomore scored the first seven VC points of the half to cut the lead to six as knocked down a pair of free throws, a jumper, and a three-point basket.
The Saints regained momentum to bring their lead back to 10 nearly two minutes later.
Isa Peczuh knocked down a triple and combined with free throws from
Ryan DeOrio and Rosenthal the deficit was just three at the 2:22 mark of the third. Peczuh and Julia Roelke added two more baskets before the end of the frame to keep the deficit at just three (45-42).
Nick tied the game in the opening minutes of the fourth with a three pointer for the Brewers. But over the next three minutes the Saints went on a 9-0 scoring run to grab back the lead. Marymount led by as much as 15 in the final minutes, ending with a 12 point victory.
The Brewers shot 43.5% from the field including 47.1% from three. But the biggest disparity came in points in the paint, where the Saints outscored Vassar by 30.
VC plays again on Saturday in their second game of the tournament against King's College at 1:00p.m.
