Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Bested By Ithaca In Liberty League Opener

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (December 1, 2017) – Visiting Ithaca College shot 51.8 percent from the field Friday evening and forced the Vassar College women's basketball team into 22 turnovers as the Brewers dropped their Liberty League opener to the visiting Bombers 69-53 in action from the Athletics & Fitness Center.

The visiting Bombers (5-1, 1-0 Liberty League) led for the majority of the first half, taking a 13-10 edge into the second quarter despite a buzzer-beating layup from Julia Roellke for Vassar. VC would come out of the gates hots in the second quarter, scoring the first six points to take a 16-13 lead on consecutive three-pointers from junior Nicole Teta and sophomore Isa Peczuh.

The Brewers and Bombers traded leads, with Vassar taking an 18-17 advantage on a layup by senior Kim Romanoff, but IC posted a 13-2 run to take a 28-18 edge. During the span, seldom used Ithaca reserve Grace Cannon came off the bench to tally nine points. Vassar watched the Ithaca lead grow up to as much as 25 in the third quarter, as the Bombers pulled away for the conference win.

Vassar got 11 points off the bench from Teta, as she shot 4-of-11 from the field while adding four assists and three steals. Peczuh also tallied double-digits as a reserve, posting 10 points for the Brewers while sophomore Sophie Nick made all four of her field goals for eight points. Roellke also posted seven points and a team-leading six rebounds for VC, which finished 19-of-53 (35.8 percent) from the floor.

For the visiting Bombers, Julie Yacovoni was perfect from the floor on her seven shot attempts, posting 14 points while Cannon chalked up a season-best 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Ithaca won the rebounding battle, 37-26, and the Bomber's defense held VC leading scorer Ariella Rosenthal scoreless for the first time in her career.

Vassar (4-2, 0-1 Liberty League) will be back at it on Saturday afternoon for more Liberty League action, hosting William Smith College (3-2, 0-1 Liberty League) at 2 p.m. in the AFC.
