Vassar Women's Volleyball Match Notes - NCAA Regionals

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 7, 2017) – The Vassar Women's Volleyball Team heads back to Potsdam to compete in NCAA Regionals for the first time in 11 years. The Brewers received one of 20 at-large bids to the Tournament.

Tickets: Single match tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and $3 for students between the ages of 12-17. Full tournament passes are available for $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $7 for students ages 12-17.

Last Time Out: The Brewers fell to the eventual Liberty League Champions, Clarkson University in four sets Friday. VC hit just .073 on the contest, nearly the worst mark for the season. That said, the Brewers did not go down without a fight, still adding 47 kills, 71 digs, and seven service aces, led by Gallagher and Ninkovich.

A Look at The Brewers (22-7, 5-2 LL): 
 
  • The Brewers have matched up with five teams making the 2017 tournament this season, with an overall record of 3-3.
  • This will be Vassar's sixth NCAA appearance, the first since 2006.
  • In these six appearances, Vassar has advanced to the second round just twice ('01 and '02).
  • Junior hitter Devan Gallagher is just two kills away from the single-season record (471). She is among the best in the country in kills/set this season, with 4.69, while hitting .273 on the season.
  • Freshman libero Anna Zucchero has been reliable for steady production, posting 28 and 26 digs in the past two matches against Clarkson. Gallagher matches her pace, the duo posting 3.81 and 3.36 digs/set respectively. As a team, VC contributes 16.44 digs/set.
  • Junior utility Lauren Ninkovich has been a vital asset to the Brewers this season, stepping in for Jane McLeod (season-ending injury) in the past five matches, most recently posting 15 kills against Clarkson last weekend.
  • The Brewers hold on to a .220 hitting mark heading in to this weekend, with 1272 kills thus far, good for 12.47 kills/set.
  • VC prioritizes the first contact, averaging 2.6 aces/set, with 264 overall, holding opponents to just 1.6 aces/set.
  • From the service line, the Brewers are led by MacMillan (.61 aces/set, 60 total), Zucchero (.42, 38), and Ninkovich (.41, 41), who all rank among the top ten in the Liberty League.
  • MacMillan holds the Brewer offense together, post over 1,000 assists for the second-consecutive season, averaging 10.39 assists/set, a league-best.
A Look at the Beavers (20-9, 8-2 NEWMAC)
  • This will be the Beavers third national tournament appearance in four years. Most recently, in 2015, the team advanced to the second round with a sweep over Roger Williams before falling to Bowdoin.
  • After beating Wellesley in four sets October 24th, Babson fell in a 5-set battle in the NEWMAC Championship.
  • Stand-out sophomore setter, Elizabeth Cameron and freshman hitter Allie Puccio were recently name were named to All-Conference teams, Kristin Carasotto joining the accolades as a member of the All-Sportsmanship squad.
  • As a team, the Beavers post an impressive .203 hitting percentage, averaging 12.1 kills/set.
  • The squad is led by Puccio and Shannon Roseen, posting 3.06 and 2.61 kills/set respectively.
  • Defensively, five starters have posted at least 150 digs to date, led by libero Abby Beecher (420, 4.16 digs/set).
  • Babson is strong from the service line, posting 248 aces thus far, second-best in the conference.
  • Setter Cameron loves to highlight the versatility of the offense, posting 9.21 assists/set, also contributing 1.07 kills/set of her own.
  • The Brewers and Beavers have played just four mutual opponents to date. Against mutual opponents, Vassar is 5-0, while Babson is 3-2.
 
Against Babson All-TIme: The Brewers are 1-1 against Babson all-time, only competing in 2009 and 2015.
 
Tournament Snapshot: For the first time in Liberty League history, three teams received bids to the NCAA tournament: Vassar, Clarkson, and Ithaca. They are joined by familiar foe, Stevens, as well as four other northeast opponents: Morrisville St., Endicott, Merchant Marine, and aforementioned Babson. All eight teams compete Friday, the winners advancing to Saturday's semi-final contests, the regional championship taking place Sunday at 1 p.m.. Up Next: The NCAA tournament follows a single-elimination format. Should the Brewers knock-off the Beavers, they will await the winner of Friday evening's contest between Clarkson and Morrisville State, hoping for a rematch against the familiar rival. The winners of these two matches will face-off Saturday at 5 p.m..
