GENEVA, NY (November 5, 2017) – On a rainy afternoon at Hobart College, the Vassar men's soccer team dropped to the Hobart Statesmen 2-0 in the Liberty League Championship Game.
Both teams had their chances in the hard fought game, but it was the top seeded Statesmen that made them count. Vassar outshot Hobart 15-14 throughout the game.
The top seed opened up the scoring in the first half off a header from Alex Weisbein. His teammate August Martini sent in a corner kick and he headed the ball in to put his side up 1-0 in the 29
th minute.
The score remained 1-0 as both teams headed into the locker room at the halftime break.
In the second frame, the Statesmen got their second score, again from Weisbein. Vassar was pinned inside their box as Hobart continued to fire away. Weisbein collected a rebound and fired a low shot for the goal.
The Brewers didn't give up and continued to play hard through tough conditions. They were able to get a few more quality chances, but none found the back of the net.
Senior
Matt Marcelino finished the game with five saves. On the offensive side of things,
Mattie Mrlik led the team with four shots, while
Reid Smith had two and nine other players had one each.
Seniors
Tanner Sands,
Reid Smith, and
Hayden Van Brewer, along with sophomore
Mattie Mrlik were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
