Brewers Advance To Liberty League Final

GENEVA, NY (November 4, 2017) – The Vassar women's soccer team is heading to the Liberty League Championship after a hard fought 1-0 win over third seeded RIT on Saturday night.

It was the senior Amada McFarland who knocked in the game-winning-goal in the 64th minute. The midfielder was on the end of a cross into the middle and she blasted a shot from 10 yards out. The assist was credited to the freshman Ally Thayer as she helped put the Brewers up 1-0 in the second half.

"Amanda is incredible, and she is surrounded by people who respect her and love her," said Head Coach Corey Holton. "I think it was a great team effort today from the back to the front and I think Amanda just put the team on her shoulders as a senior captain should and really got the job done today."

In the first half, Vassar controlled the offensive play outshooting RIT 6-4 and earning five corner kicks to the Tigers' 1. Fiona Walsh kept the Tigers attack off the scoreboard picking up three saves in those opening 45 minutes.

Out of the break, the Brewers put the pressure on, keeping the ball in the offensive third. After McFarland's goal, the Tigers flipped the switch and tried to take control of the game. RIT earned six corner kicks in the second 45 minutes and had three shots to Vassar's two.
In the waning minutes, RIT had an excellent chance, but defender Jordan Moss stepped in front of the ball on the goal line to preserve the shutout and the win.

Walsh finished with three saves, while picking up her 10th win and seventh shutout of the season.

McFarland led the offense with her one goal off three shots, while Ally Thayer, Dhalia Chroscinski, Sara Seper, Emma Lavelle, and Ashley Ferry all registered one.

"We definitely wanted another chance at William Smith, we lapsed for 11 minutes against them in the regular season and they took advantage of it. We now know what we can do against them and we're going to come out hard and play like we know how."

With the win, the Brewers advance to the Liberty League Championship Game on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. where they will face the host and top seed William Smith. The Herons took down St. Lawrence, 3-0, to earn their right to play for the title.
