Vassar Men's Basketball Notes - Ithaca, Hobart

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 30, 2017) – The Brewers begin league play this weekend with two games in the AFC. Ithaca begins their first season as a member of the Liberty League and face the Brewers at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, and then on Saturday, No. 19 Hobart visits Poughkeepsie at 4:00 p.m.

Last Time Out:  Vassar fell to the third ranked team in the country, Williams College, 90-57, on Tuesday night in the Brewers home opener. Ten different Brewers scored on the night, with three players reaching nine points. Paul Grinde who had nine points also led the team with seven rebounds. Owen Murray recorded just two points, but registered five rebounds and three assists. Hugh Durham played just 14 minutes, but tallied nine points and hit two out of six three-pointers.
 
A Look at the Brewers (0-4, 0-0):
  • Vassar has two players averaging double figures, Paul Grinde (14.5) and Jesse Browne (11.0).
  • Freshman Zach Bromfeld has been very efficient offensively, converting 66.7% of his shot attempts while averaging 9.3 points per game.
  • The rookie has attempted the third most free throws on the team and is converting at 81.3%.
  • The Brewers have four players averaging at least 2.0 assists per game.
  • Vassar is second in the league in field goal percentage (.485).
  • Grinde is third in the league in field goal percentage (.571).
 
A Look at the Bombers (2-1, 0-0):
  • Ithaca is off to a 2-1 start this season, and have already played two games against SUNY Cortland, going 1-1 against the Red Dragons.
  • Sophomore guard Riley Thompson is third in the league in scoring, averaging 21.3 points per game.
  • Ithaca is the second highest scoring team in the league, averaging 84.0 points per game through the first three games.
  • Thompson is first in the league in three-pointers per game (5.3) and is connecting at 57.1%.
  • Junior Peter Ezema leads the Bombers with 7.7 rebounds per game.
 
Against Ithaca All-Time: The Brewers are 1-0 all-time against the Bombers, winning in their only meeting back in 2007. Friday's match up will be the first as Liberty League opponents.

A Look at the Statesmen (2-1, 0-0):
  • Hobart has already beaten two ranked teams this season, #19 St. John Fisher and #16 Rochester, but fell their last time out to Brockport.
  • The Statesmen open league play at Union College on Friday night.
  • The Statesmen have five players averaging double figures, led by junior guard Jamal Lucas (14.3 ppg).
  • Hobart is tops in the league in steals per game (10.33).

Against Hobart All-Time:  The Brewers are 4-29 against Hobart all-time dating back to their first meeting in 2001. Vassar is 1-3 against the Statesmen in the past two seasons, and lost both matchups last season.
 
Next Up:  After this weekend's pair of games, the Brewers host their final home game of 2017 when they welcome Wesleyan to the AFC on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
