MEMPHIS, TN (November 18, 2017) – The Vassar men's basketball team opened their season on Saturday afternoon at the Rhodes College Tip Off Tournament, falling to the host school, Rhodes, 126-110.
The 110 points scored is a new single-game Vassar record, topping the previous record of 107 set back on February 18, 2014. The Brewers also set single game records for field goals made (43) and field goal percentage (66.2%).
Vassar shot well from the field, but their inconsistency shooting the ball from the outside (2-10) hurt them today. The Lynx used the long ball to their advantage, connecting on 40% of their three-point tries (14-35).
Paul Grinde led the offense with a career-high 25 points, while four other Brewers notched double figures. Freshman
Zach Bromfeld had 19 points in his collegiate debut and added seven rebounds to his stat line.
Owen Murray posted a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds,
Alex Seff had 10 points, six assists and five steals, and
Lance Tebay had 10 points and five assists in his first game wearing the burgundy and gray.
In the first half, Vassar kept the score close and even held a five-point lead with 8:30 left on the clock. The game continued to go back and forth and was tied eight different times, the last at 46-46 after Grinde knocked down back-to-back layups for the Brewers. But over the final 1:20 of the half, the Lynx put together a 7-1 scoring run to go up 54-49.
The second half remained close for the opening minutes. The Brewers took the lead, 57-56, before the game was tied 59-59 at the 18:33 mark. At that point, Rhodes began to pull away thanks to their three-point shooting. The Lynx shot nearly 53% from the beyond the arc in the second half, making 10 of their three-point tries. Their largest lead in the second half was up to 22 points with just over six minutes to play.
Vassar isn't finished at the tournament and will face LeTourneau at noon on Sunday.
