Women's Basketball Makes it Two Straight Wins To Open the Season

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 17, 2017) – The Vassar women's basketball team won their second straight game to open the season. The Brewers took down Simmons College 68-42 in the opening game of the Vassar Tip Off Tournament. With the win, Vassar will move on to the Championship Game tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. to face the winner of Oneonta and Wellesley.
 
Thirteen Brewers scored on the day and just one notched double figures. Jackie Cenan led the way with 10 points, while Sophie Nick, Maeve Sussman, Ariella Rosenthal, and Ryan DeOrio all had eight points. Julia Roellke made her presence felt on the glass, picking up 10 rebounds on the day to lead the team.
 
The Brewers got off to a hot start, going up 9-0 and eventually outscoring the Sharks 19-3 in the opening quarter. Ariella Rosenthal scored six of her eight total points in the frame to put Vassar in excellent position early on.
 
The hot scoring continued in the second quarter, as the Brewers ran their lead up to 37-15 at the break. Both Nick and Sussman each tallied four points in the period to add on to the Vassar lead. The Brewers were also 3-4 from behind the arc in the frame, with made baskets from DeOrio, Sussman, and Isa Peczuh.
 
Simmons came out with a sense of urgency in the third quarter showing a lot of fight, and outscoring the Brewers 14-13 in those 10 minutes. It was the lowest scoring frame for Vassar, but their defense held tough and didn't allow the Sharks to cut into the lead.
 
The Brewers offense was back at it in the fourth frame, shooting 47% from the field off 8-17 shooting. With 18 more points in the final 10 minutes, Vassar held a 29 point advantage with just over two minutes to play.
 
For the game, Vassar shot 45% from the field, 40% from three-point range, and 75% at the line.
 
The Brewers are back at it tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. in the Vassar Tip Off Tournament Championship Game.
