Gallagher Breaks Single Season Record As VC Falls in NCAA First Round

POTSDAM, NY (November 10, 2017) – Junior hitter Devan Gallagher broke the single season record for kills in a season Friday evening in the NCAA First Round matchup with Babson College at Clarkson University, but the Brewers fell to the Beavers 3-1 in action from Alumni Gymnasium in Potsdam Regional.

VC fell by scores of 25-11, 25-15, 19-25 and 25-21, as the Brewers were back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006. VC was denied of its first NCAA win since the 2002 season, as Babson will take on the winner of host Clarkson University and Morrisville State College.

Vassar couldn't get much going on either side of the ball in the opening set, as the Brewers hit .000 while Babson connected on a hitting clip of .282 with 17 kills to take a 1-0 match edge. The Beavers won 12 of the opening 13 points of the match before Vassar finally ended the stretch on a kill by junior Lauren Ninkovich.

Later in the first game, Gallagher provided a bright spot in what was a forgettable set for the Brewers as she became Vassar's single-season kill record holder with her 473rd of the season. Gallagher passed Mackenzie Johnson '03, who held the record for 13 seasons before Gallagher reached the number this year.

The second set was much closer as VC and Babson battled back and forth over the first half of the period. Vassar took a 12-11 lead after a kill from Gallagher, but Babson rattled off four consecutive points to force a Brewers timeout. The Beavers kept the pressure on, finishing the set on a 10-3 run to take a 2-0 match advantage.

Vassar battled back with an inspired output in the third set, as VC pulled away in the stanza thanks to a balanced attack from Gallagher, Ninkovich and Colette Cambey, scoring eight of the final 10 points to earn the set and send the match to a fourth set.

In the fourth, Vassar served very well early en route to a 14-9 lead after an ace by Jorden Schreeder and a hitting error by Babson. The Beavers stormed back to tie the match at 15, using a 9-1 run to take an 18-15 edge before a Cambey kill stopped the run. After Babson took a 19-16 lead, Vassar pulled to within one at 19-18 but the Beavers extended their edge back up to three at 21-19 before terminations from Ninkovich and Gallagher made it a one-point edge once again.

After a timeout by the Beavers, they came out strong with back-to-back kills to make the score 23-20, pulling away for the 25-21 win in the fourth to advance to the NCAA Second Round. Gallagher led all hitters with 16 terminations on 61 attempts, hitting .131 while adding yet another double-double with 13 digs.

Junior setter Annie MacMillan added a double-double as well with 33 assists and 12 digs, while Ninkovich was Vassar's third player to stuff the stat sheet with 12 kills and 11 digs. Freshman Anna Zucchero added a team-best 26 digs for the Brewers, who hit .102 (38-23-147) for the match. Cambey made the most of her chances, hitting .438 with seven kills on 16 swings.

Babson had a balanced attack offensively, paced by Kristin Carosotto and Allie Puccio with 12 finishes apiece. Gabby Miller added 10 kills, while Elizabeth Cameron handed out 39 assists to go with three aces and 11 digs. Abby Beecher booked a match-best 28 digs.

The Brewers finish their historic season 22-8, having earned their sixth NCAA Tournament appearance while ninth 20-win season under the direction of head coach Jonathan Penn.
