Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Vassar Stays Unbeaten In League Play With Tie Against Skidmore

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 7, 2017) – The Vassar College men's soccer team remains unbeaten in Liberty League competition after a very physical game against Skidmore that resulted in 1-1 tie in double overtime.

"League games are going to be pretty physical and are going to be decided by this or that. And again, this game had everything, a lot of physicality and some good play at times," said Head Coach Andy Jennings after the match.

Both teams were aggressive form the start and that would not let up through the full 110 minutes of the match. The first of eight yellow cards on the day was pulled in the sixth minute, which certainly set the tone of the game early on.

Neither side could find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes, but they sure did their best. Combined, Vassar and Skidmore had 10 shots during that time and four total saves.

Out of the break, in the 64th minute the Thoroughbreds would strike first. Mike Park lined up for a free kick just inside the midfield line near the left side. He fired a stunning shot that was placed perfectly in the top corner net for the first score of the day.

The Brewers answered right back in the 68th minute to tie the game. Tanner Sands began the play with a free kick. He lofted the ball into the box to Jonathan Bow, who touched it to Mattie Mrlik who passed it to Tyler Gilmore as he was able to score.

Vassar headed into overtime for the third time season, but first in Liberty League action. The Thoroughbreds and Brewers continued their physical play, but also continued to put pressure on the opposing defense. They combined for five shots and three corner kicks in the extra 20 minutes, but the end result would be a 1-1 tie.

Mrlik led the team with eight shots, and nearly had a game-winner with a beautiful header that hit the inside post and bounced the wrong way. Henrik Olsson, Jose Novas, and Kavin Baliat each registered two shots.

Will Marment played the full 110 minutes in net and made six saves against 17 total shots on the day.

VC stays at home for two contests next weekend, beginning with a visit from Clarkson on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
