Women’s Volleyball Outlasts Skidmore College Friday In Five Sets

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (October 6, 2017) – Sophomore Jane McLeod and junior Devan Gallagher combined for 43 kills on Friday evening, helping the Vassar College women's volleyball team past Skidmore College 3-2 in Liberty League action from Williamson Sports Center. VC earned the match with a 26-24, 23-25, 25-24, 22-25, 15-10 score line.

The Brewers upped their winning streak to eight matches, which is the longest since Vassar started the 2009 season with eight consecutive wins. The victory was also just the second match all season for Vassar that has gone five sets, with the Brewers earning both including Friday's win and a five-set win over Lebanon Valley College to start the season.

The story of the match was Vassar's ability to end points in the fifth set, as Vassar posted eight kills in the final set while also adding three service aces as well. In the final stanza, both teams battled through the opening 16 points, as no team led by more than two. With the score 8-7 Skidmore in the final game, Vassar posted six straight points including two terminations from McLeod to make the score 13-8.

Skidmore posted the next two points to pull to within two at 13-10 after a kill from Katy Ehnstrom, but McLeod helped VC side out with the final of her 22 kills Friday and junior Lauren Ninkovich ended the match with a service ace to push the Brewers to a 4-0 Liberty League mark.

Vassar led early on in the match thanks to taking the opening set behind the right arm of Gallagher, who started the match with 10 kills in the first stanza. Down 24-23 in the first game, Gallagher helped fend off a set point for the Thoroughbreds (12-7, 2-2 Liberty League), and junior Annie MacMillan served out the set with an ace before Skidmore committed an error to end the set.

Skidmore battled back in the second game, hitting a match-best .238 while tallying 15 kills to pull the match even at a game apiece. Vassar would force Skidmore into 10 hitting errors in the third game, hitting .231 with only two mistakes to retake the one-set edge, as VC scored three of the final four points in the third set with the exclamation mark coming on a set-ending kill from McLeod.

Vassar trailed 12-9 in the fourth set before sophomore Colette Cambey started a 5-0 run on the strength of three kills from McLeod and a pair from Cambey. The hosts would retake the lead at 21-20 after a kill from Sophia Hettler, and sent the match into the fifth with a 25-22 fourth-set win.

McLeod chalked up her 22 kills on 61 swings, matching her career high for terminations Friday as she hit .295. Gallagher added 21 finishes and 19 digs, also posting two aces and three assisted blocks. With her kill total, Gallagher now sits with 995 kills for her career as she tries to become Vassar's 11th player with 1000 kills in her career.

Gallagher wasn't the only person with a double-double, as MacMillan added a season-best 54 assists to go with 12 digs, four assisted blocks and three aces. Cambey added six kills and a season-best seven blocks, and freshman Anna Zucchero finished with a team-best 23 digs. Sophomore Jorden Schreeder added 10 digs for Vassar, which hit .185 (58-24-184) for the evening. VC also posted a season-best 11 blocks on the night.

Vassar will return to action tomorrow afternoon at home, taking on Union College in Kenyon Hall in 4 p.m. in more Liberty League play.
