POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 28, 2017) – The Vassar men's soccer team wrapped up their regular season with a 1-0 victory over Ithaca College on Gordon Field. It was the Brewers' sixth Liberty League win of the season, marking the most in program history. With the win, Vassar also secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
"It was awesome for us to go out on a win, and a really exciting, great game," said Head Coach
Andy Jennings. "The attitude was fantastic, they worked hard and we knew what we had to do. We had to go out and win it and we like those situations because we like to attack. They did a great job defensively, held us to just one goal. But I'm very excited for the players because they've worked very hard for this. It's a tough league and we did very well, so we're really happy."
The Brewers had their chances all game long as they won the battle on nearly every statistical category. Vassar fired off 11 shots to just six for the Bombers while earning four corner kicks to Ithaca's two.
In the opening minutes of the game, senior
Jose Novas nearly headed in a beauty of goal, but the ball went just high over the crossbar. The Brewers had six other shots in the first half alone, but none found the back of the net.
In the second half, Vassar didn't hold back continuing to put pressure on the Ithaca back line. In the 67
th minute, the Brewers finally broke through with a goal by
Kevin Baliat.
Hayden Van Brewer sent in a hard ball from the near sidline to the far-right post where Baliat was able to get a foot on it and knock it in for his first score of the season.
With a one goal lead, Vassar held on for the final 20 minutes to keep the Bombers at bay.
Matt Marcelino played a solid game in net making one save against six Ithaca shots.
The Brewers are locked in as the No. 2 seed in the Liberty League Tournament which will be hosted by Hobart. Vassar will play the winner of the Skidmore and St. Lawrence matchup on Saturday, November 4 in the semifinal round. The championship game will be played on Sunday, November 5.
