Vassar Women's Soccer Notes - Ithaca

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 26, 2017) – With a stunning freekick, the Vassar Women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over RPI. The win marks their seventh shutout of the season and breaks their two game losing streak. The victory also sets the Brewers up to capture a the two seed in Liberty League standings and positions them for an exciting post-season run. However before playoff talk, they will take on Ithaca College on the road this Saturday in the last regular season game.

Last Time Out: Following a slow first half start, the Brewers came out strong in the second half with Amanda MacFarland scoring a beautiful freekick into the top left corner. The 52' minute game-winner marks the senior's sixth goal of the season. Vassar was able to hold on afterwards thanks in part to the three saves made by Fiona Walsh.
 
A look at the Brewers (9-4-3, 5-2-1 Liberty League):
  • The win over the Engineers on Wednesday places the Brewer firmly in second place with 16 points.
  • McFarland's goal marks her third game winning goal of the season and sixth score overall. She currently ranks second on the team in total points (15) and goals (6).
  • Freshman Ashley Ferry has had a brilliant rookie season, leading the team in goals (7), assists (6), and points (20). She ranks tied for second in the league in assists and third in points.
  • Two Brewers have started every game for the for the Vassar defense. Freshman keeper Fiona Walsh and junior defender Emma Lavelle have been key components in the Brewer backline while combining for 2899 minutes so far.
  • Walsh has been big her in rookie season, averaging 5.63 saves per game for a .857 save percentage and .906 goal against average.
  • She currently ranks 52nd in the nation in total minutes played for a keeper and is in the top 100 keepers with her goal against average.
  • 11 individual Brewers have either found the back of the net this season or assisted in a goal
  • These Brewers have helped the team to, on average, out shoot, out assist, and out score their opponents.
 
A look at the Bombers (6-9, 3-5 Liberty League):
  • The Bombers need a win this Saturday to remain in play off contention
  • On Wednesday, a late goal by RIT gave the Tigers the advantage over Ithaca, ending the Bomber's three game win-streak.
  • Ithaca's offensive play has been formidable as they currently rank 4th in the league in goals per game and second in corner kicks.
  • Leading the offense is Shoshana Bedrosian with eight goals, two assists for a total of eighteen points.
  • She also ranks fourth in the league in total points and third in goals.
  • The team's assist leader is Alex Epifani with four
  • Three Bombers have started every game. Kendall Cirella, Kate Kohler, and McKensie Galusha have been solid in the backline while on their way to playing 3763 minutes.
  • Stacey DiGiorgio has been strong in goal for Ithaca making 47 saves in 14 games.
 
Against Ithaca All-Time: The Brewers are 0-2-1 all-time against the Bombers. Their last encounter was in 2008 when Ithaca had the upper hand, defeating the Brewers in a 1-0 game.
 
Up Next: Its play off time! Vassar will play in the Liberty League tournament with times, teams, and locations to be determined. The opening round begins on Tuesday, October 31 with the semifinals and finals to be played on November 4 and 5.
