Aces Wild As Vassar Women’s Volleyball Knocks Off Geneseo In Three

ROCHESTER, NY (October 13, 2017) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team kept their historic run going Friday night at the Brick City Invitational, as the Brewers posted 15 service aces to claim their 10th consecutive victory with a 3-0 win over SUNY Geneseo in play from Clark Gym on the campus of Rochester Institute of Technology.

The 10-game winning streak is the second-longest for the Vassar women's volleyball team ever, eclipsed only by the 11-match stretch from September 18 through October 12, 2012. That season the Brewers started the campaign 18-1 before finishing the season 25-7 that year. The Brewers moved to 18-3 with Friday's 25-11, 25-19 and 25-22 triumph, much in part due to the success of the service game.

In the opening set, Vassar controlled the tempo both offensively and defensively, keeping the Knights (16-7) out of system with its strong serving. The Brewers on the other hand stayed in their offense for much of the opening set, hitting .429 in only 14 attempts. Vassar picked up 14 of the game's first 17 points, six thanks to aces including three from junior Devan Gallagher and two from fellow junior Annie MacMillan.

VC continued to cruise in the opening stanza, eventually clinching the first set on a solo block from Gallagher. The Knights would rebound in the second set, holding Vassar under a hitting rate of .200. Geneseo led 14-11 in the second game, but Vassar would rally to tie the game at 15-all after back-to-back aces from freshman Anna Zucchero.

Geneseo regained a three-point lead after kills from Abby May and Bridget Lougen, sandwiching an ace from Grace Cergol, but Vassar answered with the next eight points highlighted by consecutive terminations from Jennifer Kerbs made the score 23-18. The Knights ended the stretch on a kill from May, but VC took the 2-0 match edge as sophomore Jane McLeod earned a kill on a block error.

Both teams would rely on their offenses in the third set, as the teams combined for 32 total terminations in the stanza. Down 3-1, Geneseo chalked up a 6-1 run to take a 7-4 lead after a kill from Alexandra Frank. Vassar came right back with a 7-1 run of its own, as Kerbs and Colette Cambey capped the spurt with back-to-back kills to make it 13-9.

Vassar would keep its lead throughout the rest of the game, though Geneseo stayed within striking distance, trailing by just one late in the set at 23-22 after a kill from May. Senior Bria Corham hammered down a kill to push VC to match point, and MacMillan fittingly helped the Brewers finish the match with her fifth service ace of the night.

VC only totaled 34 kills on the night, led by McLeod with 10 terminations on .292 hitting. Gallagher added nine terminations, eight digs and three aces, while sophomore middle Colette Cambey added six kills to hit .385. Kerbs totaled five kills on 10 attacks, also posting three total blocks, and MacMillan finished with two kills, 28 assists, five aces and four digs. Junior Lauren Ninkovich posted nine digs and two aces, and sophomore Jorden Schreeder also contributed seven digs.

The Brewers will try to make history on Saturday afternoon with a pair of non-conference battles at the Brick City Invitational, taking on The College of Brockport (15-7) at 10 a.m. and Springfield College (14-5) at noon in action from Clark Gym at RIT.
