Vassar Women's Soccer Notes — Western Connecticut State

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 6, 2016) —After starting the season 1-1 on the road, the Vassar College women's soccer team will have its home opener on Wednesday, September 7. The Brewers will host the Colonials of Western Connecticut State University on Gordon Field at 4 p.m.

Last Time Out: The Brewers split their first road trip of the season 1-1, with a 3-0 shutout at New Paltz on Sept. 1 and a 1-0 setback at New York University on Sept. 3. In their most recent outing, the Violets scored the game-winner late in the second half to separate themselves.

A Look At The Brewers:
  • Senior striker Jordyn Matthews leads the Brewers with four points on the young season, having found the back of the net twice in Vassar's 3-0 season-opening win at New Paltz on Sept. 1.
  • Senior forward Rory Chipman has collected three points thus far this season, notching a goal and an assist off the bench in Vassar's 3-0 Opening Day win at New Paltz on Sept. 1.
  • Sophomore midfielder Sara Seper and freshman defender Jordan Moss have each earned a point, assisting on goals in Vassar's 3-0 win at New Paltz on Sept. 1.
  • Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Tapolsky has started in the cage for the Brewers in both of their contests, earning a clean sheet at New Paltz on Sept. 1 and taking a close 1-0 loss at New York University on Sept. 3.
  • The Brewers have outshot opponents in shots-on-goals, 20-8.
  • The Brewers have been generous with the ball, as all three of Vassar's goals have been assisted.
  • Every goal scored by either Vassar or its opponent has been scored in the second half. Through two games, no one has scored before halftime.
  • The Brewers looks to build upon last season, in which they finished 9-7-2 overall and 3-3-2 in Liberty League play. Vassar notched a spot in the Liberty League Championship, ultimately falling 5-0 to No. 3 William Smith College in the semifinals.
  • Vassar showed incredible endurance last season, playing 10 extra overtime periods in 2015. In four games that went to overtime, the Brewers walked away with either a win or a draw.
A Look At The Colonials:
  • West Conn opened the season with a double-overtime, 1-0 win at Farmingdale State before falling 2-1 versus Buffalo State and 1-0 in overtime against Rensselaer at the Farmingdale Tournament.
  • Junior midfielder Andrea DeVoe has led the offensive attack, leading the Colonials with four points on two goals — one of which was a game-winner.
  • Sophomore midfielder Lucy Daniels and senior midfielder Celia DeVoe have each tallied a point on an assist.
  • Goalkeeper Jullian Fernandez has started in net for all three of the Colonials' games. The junior has earned one shutout and has taken two losses after making 10 total saves.
  • Over three games, West Conn has averaged 9.7 shots per game.
  • The Colonials have been outshot by their opponents 49-29, but have outshot opponents 14-13 in shots on goals.
  • The Colonials finished the 2015 season with a 16-6-1 overall and 5-1-1 in-conference record. They ended the regular season with six straight victories before winning both games in the LEC Tournament for the title.
  • In the 2015 NCAA Tournament, West Conn fell 1-0 in the first round against Brandeis.
  • The Colonials lost two of their top three offensive leaders from lasr season in Kelsey Chacho (21 points in 2015) and Emily Newhard (14 points in 2015), but return now-junior forward Autumn Sorice (28 points in 2015).
Against Western Connecticut All-Time: The Brewers are 3-7 all-time versus the Colonials, having won their two most recent outings. Vassar secured a 3-0 shutout on Sept. 17, 2014 before most recently notching a 2-0 shutout on the road on Sept. 8, 2015.

Next Up: Vassar next competes in the Stevens Engineering Cup on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 12:30 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 11 at 12:30 p.m. The two-day tournament will be held at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey.
