POTSDAM, NY (September 30, 2016) — The Vassar College men's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 win at Clarkson University on Friday.
Goalkeeper Matt Marcelino earned the win for the Brewers (7-1-2, 1-0-1 Liberty) with two saves, while Michael King took the loss for the Golden Knights (4-3-2, 0-1-1 Liberty) with three stops.
"We didn't play the best that we've played, but we got the victory, and that was very pleasing," coach Andy Jennings said. "The attitude, the fight, the determination and the commitment were all great qualities."
Vassar outshot Clarkson 7-4 in the first half, but the Golden Knights carried a 1-0 edge into the break after Kevin Calnan notched a quick goal. Three minutes into the contest, Calnan chucked a left-footed shot from the top of the box into the back of the net, thanks to an assist from Eric Herberger.
The Brewers continued to play with confidence, eventually converting on opportunities in the second half. In the 62nd minute, Hayden Van Brewer used a long throw-in to find freshman Mattie Mrlik, whose header shot was saved but dropped by the goalkeeper. The rebound fell to fellow forward Jose Novas, who poked in the equalizer for the Brewers, 1-1.
Later, in the 81st minute, defender Tyler Gilmore headed in his third goal of the season off of a long free kick by Tanner Sands. Neither team fired another shot the rest of the way, as the Brewers held on for their first win in conference play.
Mrlik paces the Brewers with 15 points on five goals and five assists; Novas has 10 points on four goals and two assists; Sands has nine points on four goals and an assist; and Gilmore has six points on three goals.
Vassar will have a quick turnaround, as the Brewers return to the pitch Saturday, Oct. 1. They'll face the Saints of St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY, with kickoff set for 2 p.m.
