Brewer Men’s Tennis Tops Union, Bard Saturday

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 24, 2016) – The Vassar College men's tennis team had an early wake-up call this morning, leaving Poughkeepsie, NY at 6:00 a.m., playing Union College at 9 a.m. before returning to host Bard College at 4 p.m. on Joss Courts. The schedule didn't seem to bother the resilient Brewer squad, who earned 9-0 wins in both matches.

"Credit to the guys, it was a definitely a long day, tested their endurance," head coach Alex Wong. "Everyone had to contribute, we threw out nine different players who started and definitely had a successful day…glad to walk from today 2-0."

Vassar 9, Union 0
In the opening match of the day, Vassar made quick work of the Dutchmen though Union showed some fight despite the match scores. The Brewers started the day with a win at No. 2 doubles, as freshman Allen Sokolov and sophomore Jamie Anderson knocked off Ian Bank and Zach Kaplan 8-1.

Senior Juan Felipe Laso and partner Alexander Luckmann were right behind with another win for VC, as the tandem knocked off Justin Golf and Del Schunk 8-5 at the No. 3 doubles spot. The most contested doubles match was at No. 1, as freshman Dom Demeterfi and Nick Litsky outlasted David Bond and Max McGeown 9-8 to sweep doubles.

In singles action, the Brewers started things off with another win by Laso, as he moved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 over Schunk. Litsky rallied from his tough doubles match to make quick work of Bond at No. 1 with scores of 6-1, 6-0 to clinch the win for VC, while Demeterfi picked up his first collegiate singles win with a 6-2, 6-3 win over David Brown at No. 6.

Sokolov would chalk up his first win as a Brewer in singles as well early Saturday, downing Kaplan at No. 2 with 6-3, 6-3 scores. Anderson picked up a win at No. 4 with 6-4, 6-1 score lines over McGeown, while Nick Lee also was impressive at No. 5 singles, winning all 12 games in a 6-0, 6-0 win.

Vassar 9, Bard 0
The Brewers returned home after their two-hour bus ride to campus to earn the win over Bard, shaking off tired legs and exhausted arms. The match was made a little bit easier though by the nice crowd supporting Vassar, as VC welcomed back its alumni Saturday coupled with the fact it was Parent's Weekend on campus as well.

Against Bard, Luckmann and Nick Zuczek partnered for a win at No. 3 doubles over Nicholas George and Zayd Normand with a clean 8-0 score, while Laso and Anderson also blanked their opponents 8-0 at No. 2 doubles to put VC up 2-0.  In the final doubles outing of the afternoon, Litsky and Demeterfi pushed past Keillor Mose and Satchel Fisher 8-5 to once again take all three doubles points.

In singles, freshman Zamir Birnbach competed in his first match as a Brewer and looked great, breaking serve six times over two sets in a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6. Anderson also chalked up his fourth combined win on Saturday with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles to clinch the match for VC.

Sokolov moved to 2-1 on the season in singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 over Fisher, followed by a 6-3, 6-2 victory by Laso at the No. 3 spot. Lee would add another singles win to his ledger late Saturday afternoon, as he took down George 6-2, 6-2, and Litsky bested Mose 6-1, 6-1 in the final match of the day as dusk approached.

"It was a really long day full of a lot of harder matches than the score lines indicate often," said Anderson. "It's good to get the team working together, working up some good chemistry, keeping going with what were building and what we are working towards."

Vassar is done with dual matches for the fall, but does have the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regionals next weekend up at Hobart College, starting Saturday and going through Monday morning.
