Last Time Out: Vassar held the possession edge, but ultimately fell 1-0 versus Montclair State University (6-1-1) at MSU Soccer Park on Wednesday. The Brewers outshot the Red Hawks 15-10 overall, doubling their number of shots in the second half, 10-5. Vassar took nine shots in the final 20 minutes of regulation, but all of them were either saved or blocked.
A Look At The Brewers (1-5-1):
- Vassar has played five of its first seven games either on the road or at neutral sites. Eight of the Brewers' 17 regular-season games are at home this season.
- Jordyn Matthews and Audrey Pillsbury lead the Brewer offense with two goals apiece, including the game-winner by Matthews against New Paltz on Sept. 1.
- Rory Chipman has also chipped in on offense, totaling three points off a goal and an assist.
- Sara Seeper and Jordan Moss have been generous in lending a helping pass, as they each lead the team with two assists on the season.
- Goalkeepers Stephanie Tapolsky and Phoebe Reuben have both spent time in net. Tapolsky has made 21 saves for a 1-5-0 record, including a shutout, while Reuben has made two saves for a 0-0-1 mark.
- The Brewers have outshot opponents 106-70 overall and 50-33 in shots-on-goal.
- Six of the Brewers' seven total goals have been scored in the second half. Also, six of their seven goals have been assisted.
- The Brewers look to build upon last season, in which they finished 9-7-2 overall and 3-3-2 in Liberty League play. Vassar notched a spot in the Liberty League Championship, ultimately falling 5-0 to No. 3 William Smith College in the semifinals.
- Vassar showed incredible endurance last season, playing 10 extra overtime periods in 2015. In four games that went into overtime, the Brewers walked away with either a win or a draw. Already this season, the Brewers have forced an extra period twice (against WCSU on Sept. 7 and Oneonta on Sept. 17).
A Look At The Thoroughbreds (3-1-1):
- The Thoroughbreds have fared better in Saratoga Springs, owning a perfect 3-0-0 record at home and a 0-1-1 record on the road. Skidmore most recently settled for a 0-0 draw at Union College on Sept. 20.
- Skidmore has beaten Castleton University, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and Plattsburgh State, fallen at Williams College and tied with Union.
- Emily Sallterman leads the team with eight points on four goals. Emily Mendes has also been helpful, totaling five points on two goals and an assist.
- Jemimah Cochrane has been extraordinarily efficient for the Thoroughbreds, scoring two goals off the bench over two games.
- The Thoroughbreds have outshot opponents 109-66 overall and 56-34 in shots-on-goal. Skidmore averages 21.8 shots per game.
- Of their 12 total goals, five have been assisted.
- Goalkeeper Alyssa Rollins has conceded seven goals while making 27 saves for a 3-1-1 record, including two shutouts.
- This year's group returns a lot of experience, having six seniors on the roster and just three freshmen.
- Skidmore has gotten off to a better start than it did last season, in which it opened 2015 with a 2-3-0 record through the first five games. The Thoroughbreds ended the season with five straight losses.
Against Skidmore All-Time: The Brewers are 5-21-2 versus the Thoroughbreds all-time, dating back to their first meeting in 1988. Their two most recent meetings have ended in 0-0, double-overtime draws.
Next Up: Vassar continues its homestand, hosting Clarkson University (Friday, Sept. 30 at 4 p.m.), St. Lawrence University (Saturday, Oct. 1 at 2 p.m.) and Mount Saint Mary College (Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m.) at Gordon Field.
