Last Time Out: After starting the season undefeated through the first six games, the Vassar College men's soccer team (5-1-1) suffered its first setback, falling 4-2 at Oneonta (4-2-0) on Saturday.
Tanner Sands opened scoring in the 28th minute, thanks to an assist from
Reid Smith before the Red Dragons scored the first three goals of the second half. The Brewers scored once more in the contest, as
Jose Novas passed around defenders for
Alex Gonzales to find the back of the net in the 68
th minute.
A Look At The Brewers (5-1-1):
- As of Sept. 13, Vassar ranks fourth in the East of the NSCAA NCAA Division III poll, only behind St. Lawrence University, University of Rochester and SUNY Cortland. The Brewers also received votes in the NSCAA NCAA Division III national poll.
- The Brewers are undefeated at Gordon with a 3-0-1 mark at home and a 2-1-0 record on the road.
- Eleven different Brewers have found the back of the net, a testament to the team's depth.
- Leading the Brewers with nine points on the year are Tanner Sands (four goals, one assist) and Mattie Mrlik (three goals, three assists). Jose Novas has also been productive up top, totaling six points on two goals and two assists.
- The Brewers have seemingly been more productive in the second half, scoring 12 of their 18 total goals after the break. Of the Brewers' 18 goals, 15 of them have been assisted.
- Hayden Van Brewer has been generous in lending a helping pass. The midfielder leads the team with four assists.
- Goalkeeper Matt Marcelino has been solid in net for the Brewers, making 25 saves over seven starts for a 5-1-1 mark, including two clean sheets.
- The Brewer defense has been phenomenal, shutting out four teams so far in Mount Saint Mary College (Sept. 4), William Paterson University (Sept. 10), Elms College (Sept. 11) and New Paltz (Sept. 14).
- The Brewers have outshot opponents 125-72 overall and 55-32 in shots-on-goal. They're averaging 17.9 shots per game and 2.57 goals per game.
- The Brewers opened the season undefeated through the first six games for the first time since 1994. Senior captain Noah Bloch is the only Brewer who was born before that season, in which Vassar finished 14-2-1 overall, including an ECAC NY-NJ Metro Region Championship. Bloch was just eight days old when the magical season commenced.
A Look At The Soaring Eagles (2-1-1):
- After starting the season 0-2, Elmira topped Hilbert College 2-1 on Sept. 10, tied with RIT 0-0 on Sept. 14 and toppled Utica College 6-1 on Sept. 17.
- The Soaring Eagles are 1-2-0 on the road and 1-0-1 at home.
- Five different Soaring Eagles have found the back of the net, led by Michael Bryant, who has eight points on three goals and two assists through five games.
- Donte Donegal has also been productive on offense, totaling four points on two goals, including a game-winner, over four games.
- Goalkeepers Jacod Liese and Haruka Okamoto have split time in net. Liesehas made 13 saves for a 0-2-1 record, while Okamoto has made six for a 2-0-0 mark.
- The Soaring Eagles have outshot opponents 76-68 overall and 36-26 in shots-on-goal. Of Elmira's eight goals, six of them have been assisted.
- Elmira has seemingly been more productive in the first half, totaling six of its eight total goals before the break.
- The Soaring Eagles look to build up last season, in which they went 7-6-5 overall and 3-1-3 in conference play.
- In the first round of the 2015 Elite 8 Championships, Elmira drew with Ithaca College 0-0 before falling in penalty kicks 11-10 in double-overtime.
Against Elmira All-Time: This will mark the first meeting between the Vassar and Elmira men's soccer teams.
