JAMAICA, NY (March 23, 2016) – The No. 10 Vassar College men's volleyball team won its sixth straight and 20
th match of the season Wednesday evening, knocking off York College (NY) in straight sets with scores of 25-5, 25-16 and 25-14.
The Brewers were never tested during the non-conference matchup with the Cardinals, hitting .429 on the evening while holding York College to a -.024 hitting rate for the match. York College totaled just 11 kills on the evening, while Vassar rejected eight attempts as well for the evening. The 20-win season for Vassar was its first since the 2013 season, while marking only the third time in program history that achievement has been accomplished.
Vassar also won its sixth straight match, which tied for the second-longest win streak in program history behind only the 13-match stretch set by the 2008 Vassar men's volleyball squad, which also holds the program record for wins in a season with 26.
VC never trailed at any moment in the match, opening up a 20-2 lead in the opening set while holding the Cardinals without a kill in the opening stanza. After a second set victory for the Brewers, Vassar sealed the win with a dominant offensive game in the third, hitting .650 to chalk up the victory.
Junior
Christian Lizana posted nine kills on 11 attempts, adding two aces for the Brewers, while
Erik Halberg chalked up five kills, three aces and four blocks in the win. Junior
Quinn Rutledge added five kills on his eight attacks, and
Reno Kriz connected on seven terminations and two aces.
Vassar finished with 12 aces on the evening, led by the four from sophomore
Matthew Knigge, who also finished all three of his attacks. Sophomore
Zechariah Lee posted two kills and four digs in addition to his 23 assists, and freshman
George Diehl added five kills and two assisted rejections.
The Brewers return home for possibly the biggest tri-match of the season Saturday, taking on No. 8 Elmira and No. 1 New Paltz in United Volleyball Conference (UVC) action from Kenyon Hall. The tri-match starts at 11 a.m. and has large playoff implications for the Brewers.
