Offense Powers No. 10 Brewers Past Mount Saint Vincent

RIVERDALE, NY (February 16, 2016) – The No. 10 Vassar College men's volleyball team hit over .500 for the third time this season, rolling past host College of Mount Saint Vincent in three games. The Brewers used their hitting rate of .533 to earn the win with scores of 25-13, 25-18 and 25-14 from the Peter Jay Sharp Center.

In addition to the solid hitting from the Brewers, Vassar showed a great ability to side out once losing the serve, chalking up a 79 percent (38-48) side out percentage for the match. The Brewers started the evening with a 25-13 victory in the opening game, as VC hit .545 for the game while posting just one error in 22 attempts.

VC (9-2) took an early 4-0 lead and would grow its lead all the way up to as much as 21-9. The Brewers were helped by a 6-0 spurt midway through the game, as sophomore Matthew Knigge (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) powered the run with two aces and a kill. Senior Reno Kriz (Breinigsville, PA/Parkland) would clinch the set for the Brewers with his fourth termination of the opening stanza.

In the second game, Vassar saw its hosts hit a match-high .235 for the game but was able to fend off the Dolphins (2-9) charge. With the score tied at 11 after a finish by CMSV hitter Neven Skoblar, Vassar posted a 4-0 run capped by a solo block by freshman George Diehl (St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh). After Mount Saint Vincent pulled to within a point twice, Vassar recorded a 5-1 run to pull away for the 2-0 match lead.

In the final set of the night, Vassar forced CMSV into negative hitting for the game, as Vassar chalked up a match-best 15 kills in the stanza to roll to the win in three games. Kriz chalked up a match-best 12 kills, needing just 20 attacks to get to the team-best total. The senior right side has now chalked up double-digit terminations in all 11 matches this season, and has been VC's leading hitter in eight matches this year.

Knigge was solid once again for the Brewers, as he led the squad with total points with 17.5, booking 10 kills on 11 attempts (.909), adding three aces and six total blocks. Junior Christian Lizana (Dublin, PA/Pennridge) needed just 11 attempts to get to six kills, while Diehl and Brian Manley (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) both added four terminations apiece.

Setters Zechariah Lee (Santa Clarita, NY/Saugus) and Daniel Halberg (Newark, DE/Salesianum) combined to dish out 31 helpers, and the squad added 11 total blocks on the match. The seven total hitting errors were the third-fewest in a match this season for VC, as the Brewers moved to 3-0 in true road games this season.

Vassar will jump back into United Volleyball Conference action this Saturday, heading to Erie, PA to battle Penn State-Behrend at 10:30 a.m. and Bard College at 1 p.m. in conference action.
