Vassar Field Hockey Game Notes – No. 9 Rochester

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 5, 2016) – The Vassar College field hockey team will look rebound from a 3-2 loss on the road last Saturday to William Smith College, hosting another ranked opponent in No. 9 University of Rochester this Saturday on Weinberg Field. The Brewers and Yellowjackets are both coming off a loss, as Rochester dropped its first game of the season Tuesday against St. John Fisher 2-1.

Last Time Out: The Brewers traveled to Geneva, NY last weekend but fell to the Herons of William Smith College 3-2 in a highly contested match-up. The Brewers trailed 2-0 right before the half, but junior Storm Sideleau notched her fourth goal of the season to make it 2-1. After the Herons made it 3-1, Alyssa More tallied and VC nearly equalized in the closing moments but the WSC defense made the lead stand up.
 
A Look At The Brewers (9-2, 1-1 Liberty League)
 
  • Vassar comes into the game with first in the Liberty League in scoring margin, averaging 3.10 more goals per game than its opposition.
  • The Brewers have allowed just five goals all season, which is four less than any other Liberty League team.
  • The NCAA statistical rankings have Vassar slotted No. 1 in goals against average as a team, as the Brewers have allowed just 0.45 goals per game.
  • VC's loss to William Smith snapped a seven-game winning streak, which was the longest win stretch in program history. What's more, Vassar allowed no goals through all seven of those games.
  • Vassar is 6-1 at home this year, with its only loss coming to Kean University back on September 7, a 2-1 overtime defeat.
  • William Smith's two first-half goals last Saturday were the first goals allowed by VC in the first half all season.
  • Sophomore Alyssa More leads the team with six goals, while More and fellow sophomore Megan Caveny each have a team-best 16 points.
  • Junior Storm Sideleau started her first game of the year on Saturday, posting her fourth goal of the year.
  • According to FieldHockeyCorner.com, Vassar is No. 19 in the country on the Average Computer Rating.

A Look At The No. 9 Yellowjackets (10-1, 1-0 Liberty League)
 
  • The Yellowjackets are coming off their first loss of the 2016 season, falling to St. John Fisher 2-1 Tuesday evening. UR led 1-0 in that game, but two second-half goals doomed the Jackets.
  • The Rochester defense has been stellar this season, allowing the sixth-fewest goals in the country, at just 0.70 per contest. Kiran Sundaram is first in the nation in goals against average at 0.40.
  • Before Tuesday's loss, U of R was one of just six teams that were undefeated in Division III field hockey.
  • Senior Sayaka Abe has posted at least one point in nine of the 11 games this season for Rochester, leading the Liberty League with eight assists. She also has 18 career assists, ninth most at UR all-time
  • Callie Fisher is the go-to option on offense, as her seven goals and 18 points lead the Yellowjacket team. Fisher is seventh all0time in points (81) and goals (35).
  • Alexis Wood has started all but one of the 11 games for Rochester, but leads the team with three defensive saves.
  • Rochester is ranked No. 26 in the FieldHockeyCorner.com ACR ratings. U of R has plated the 85th hardest schedule in Division III this season, while its RPI is 26th best in the country.
  • Head coach Wendy Andreatta is in her 10th season with the Yellowjackets, having earned a 131-62 record at the helm.
 
Against Rochester All-Time: Vassar is 3-15 all-time against the Yellowjackets, dating back to 1993 and a 3-1 win for Rochester. Vassar has earned wins over U of R in 2000, 2002 and 2014, while last year Vassar fell at Rochester 1-0. All three Brewer wins have come in Poughkeepsie.
