Brewers Secure Second Seed In Liberty League Championships

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON (October 29, 2016) — The Vassar College men's soccer team clinched a spot in the Liberty League Championships with a 2-0 shutout over Bard College in the regular season finale on Saturday.

"It was a Liberty League battle," said coach Andy Jennings following the Brewers' seventh clean sheet of the season. "They played hard, we played hard. It was back-and-forth."

Vassar also earned the No. 2 seed in the conference standings, as Union College topped Skidmore College later that day, meaning the Brewers will have home field advantage for the first round of the tournament.

"We're extremely, extremely excited," said Toby Stansell, who notched the game-winning goal, his second of the season. "Especially after a disappointing season last year, this was a huge result for us and a huge finish to the season. I think we have a ton of momentum going into the postseason."

Looking at the entire Liberty League Championship bracket, first-seeded Hobart College (9-5-3, 6-1-1) will host fourth-seeded Skidmore (7-6-3, 4-2-2), while second-seeded Vassar (12-3-2, 5-2-1) will host third-seeded Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (8-6-3, 5-2-1) in the first round.

The Brewers outshot the Raptors 19-14 overall, as they earned their fifth win in six games. Goalkeeper Adam Warner earned the victory with six stops, while Taylor Bond took the loss for Bard (6-8-3, 1-7-0) with eight.

The Brewers opened the game with aggression, taking three shots-on-goal within the first 10 minutes. On their fourth attempt, they were finally able to connect. Alex Gonzales crossed left into the box for Toby Stansell to head in the game-winner from close range in the 16th minute.

The Brewers displayed incredible ball movement throughout the match. Their efforts paid off once again when they made it a 2-nil game in the 87th minute. Following a Hayden Van Brewer free kick, Tyler Gilmore got a head on it to connect with Mattie Mrlik, who notched his team-leading eighth goal of the season to ice the game.

"It was just an awesome win," Stansell said. "These guys all rally behind each other and work hard for each other. It's a great group of guys. I love this team."

Vassar hosts RPI for the first round of the Liberty League Championships on Wednesday, Nov. 2. Kickoff from Gordon Field is timed for 2:30 p.m.
