Rosenthal’s Career High 24 Points Not Enough As Vassar Women Fall 67-61 At Clarkson

POTSDAM, NY (January 9, 2016) – Sophomore wing Ariella Rosenthal (Mill Valley, CA/Redwood) evened her career-high with 24 points Saturday afternoon at Clarkson University, but it wasn't enough as the host Golden Knights knocked off VC 67-61 in Liberty League play from Alumni Gymnasium.

The 24 points for Vassar's sophomore leader matched the 24-point output from last season's road contest at Skidmore College on January 3, 2015. The 11 field goals for Rosenthal Saturday marked a career-best, as she went 11-of-22 from the floor.

Vassar (2-8, 0-2 Liberty League) started the contest well, mainly in part to the play of its defense. The Brewers held Clarkson to just 21 first-half points and 26.5 percent shooting from the floor, with Vassar taking a 24-21 advantage into the halftime break.

After the intermission, the host Golden Knights (7-4, 2-2 Liberty League) came out of the locker room hot, scoring 24 points in the third period to take a 45-43 lead into the final period. During the third quarter, Vassar led by five at 40-35 after a running layup by freshman Nicole Teta (Maspeth, NY/Archbishop Molloy), but Clarkson scored eight of the next 11 points to knot the game at 43.

Clarkson started the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run to take the game's largest lead of 11 with 6:23 to play in regulation after a three-pointer from Devin Sorell. The Brewers would cut into the advantage of Clarkson late getting as close as four points twice, but a late three-pointer by Sorell ended any comeback efforts from the Brewers.

Senior Rose Serafini (Milton, ON/Milton District) played 28 minutes and played well in the middle, chalking up eight points to go with a team-best 14 rebounds and five blocks. With the five swats, Serafini increased her career total to 147, just 20 shy of the all-time career block record at Vassar. Senior Colleen O'Connell (Maywood, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) added nine points and five boards for VC.

Senior point guard Alex Moon (Mission Hills, CA/Bishop Alemany) was great with the ball on Saturday, chalking up a career-high eight assists in 35 minutes. Moon eclipsed her previous career-high of six set earlier this season against Mount St. Vincent, and the eight assists were the most for a VC player since Cydni Matsuoka dished out nine helpers against Scranton on March 8, 2014 in the NCAA Tournament.

The Brewers shot 38.7 percent (24-62) from the floor, and won the battle on the boards 45-35. Clarkson was paced by the 21 points from Sorell, while Ashley Loggins added eight points and 14 rebounds. Madison Shea contributed 19 points and four steals as well for CU, and Stephanie Grobe also added double-digits with 11 points and a game-best nine assists. Clarkson made 50 percent (5-10) from behind the arc, and was 16-of-21 (76.2 percent) from the charity stripe.

VC will return home Tuesday evening to host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 6 p.m. in more Liberty League action in the Athletics and Fitness Center.
