POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 30, 2016) – The Vassar College men's volleyball team hosted top-ranked Springfield College and Ramapo in a very competitive tri-match from Kenyon Hall Saturday afternoon in non-conference play. Vassar fell in four games to the No. 1 Pride, while earning a hard-fought, five set thriller over the Roadrunners of Ramapo College. VC fell to Springfield 25-21, 14-25, 25-22, and 25-18, while picking up a 25-16, 25-17,21-25, 23-25, and 15-11 win over Ramapo.
Springfield 3, Vassar 1The defensive prowess of the strong Springfield College team was on display, as the Pride totaled 13 blocks en route to the four-set win. Offensively, the Pride also hit over .462 in three of the four sets, including connecting on 61.9 percent of its attacks in the fourth and deciding set. Vassar started slow offensively and came on later in the match, but it wasn't enough to push past the No. 1 Pride.
Vassar College was paced by the 10 kills from both
Reno Kriz and
Matthew Knigge, while Knigge hit .600 on the match with a 10-1-15 attacking clip. Senior
Erik Halberg added eight kills, and
Christian Lizana posted seven kills, four digs, and three aces. Vassar setter
Zechariah Lee dished out 36 assists and posted six digs, while junior libero
Trey Cimorelli added a team-best nine digs.
George Diehl finished with six kills and four digs.
Luis Vega had a match-high 21 kills, hitting an impressive .769 for Springfield, and Greg Woods also had 11 kills, four digs, and five blocks. Julian Welsh-White posted seven kills on nine swings, supplying seven total blocks as well.
Vassar 3, Ramapo 2Vassar College's balance on offense was stellar in a five-set win over the Brewers, as VC had four hitters with double-digit kills allowing VC to outlast the Roadrunners for the win. VC posted 59 terminations in the victory, as Lee dished out 47 assists, adding four service aces, five digs, and three blocks.
Knigge led the Brewers with 13 kills, hitting .591 for the match, and Lizana added 10 kills on just 19 attacks. Cimorelli was strong with 12 digs, and Kriz registered 12 kills, two aces, and three total blocks. Knigge finished with nine total blocks, including seven assisted rejections. Halberg only got 14 sets, but he finished eight of those, and Diehl was efficient as well with a 10-1-14 (.643) hitting stat line.
Justin Feigeles led all attackers for the Roadrunners, chalking up 19 kills, as Paul Close and Patrick Wixted each had double-digit terminations with 13 and 11, respectively. Vassar hit .395 (59-14-114) for the match, while holding the Roadrunners to .225 from the floor. Ramapo was aided by 13 service aces for the match, as setter Mikhael Erushalimski posted 46 assists in the loss.

The Brewers will host Purchase College Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. in non-conference action Kenyon Hall.
