What To Look For
The Vassar College men's swimming team was able to warm up in Florida at the Aqua Crest Atomic Fireball course meet — just in time for a demanding winter schedule, which features five contests in January alone. The first of those five is a meet against Trinity College (Conn.) at 1 p.m. on Thursday in South Hadley, MA. The Brewers, who come in with a 2-3 overall mark, look to reach .500 with a win over out-of-conference Trinity. On the other hand, the Bantams hope to capture their first win, as they are 0-2 to start the season.
A Look At The Brewers
- Prior to traveling to Delray Beach, FL for the Atomic Fireball Meet, the Brewers performed in the Liberty League Championships in Troy, NY on Dec. 4th and 5th.
- Vassar finished fourth of nine teams on Day 1 of the Liberty League Championship and sixth of nine teams on Day 2, collecting 523.50 points for the weekend.
- The Brewers have collectively gotten better as the season progresses, breaking seasonal team-bests for 16 racing categories at the Liberty League Championships, including the 100-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly.
- Vassar's breaststroke swimmers have proved to be competitive in the conference. Specifically, Jonah Strand (Woodstock, NY/Onteora Central) finished the 100-yard race of the Liberty League Championships in less than a minute at 59.59 for third place. The other two swimmers in the 100-yard breaststroke also improved their season-best times.
- Anthony Walker (Madison, WI/James Madison) set a seasonal-best time of 53.23 for fourth-place in the 100 Fly on Day 2 of the Liberty League Championships, Greg Cristina (Suffield, CT/Suffield) placed 11th after shaving almost two seconds off his season-best for 54.68 and Luke Morrison (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Prep) also scored in the competitive field.
- Three Brewers from the 2014-15 squad return for this season after earning Liberty League All-Academic Team honors. Chris Cerutti, Isaiah Hale and Anthony Walker came into the last season carrying at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average after at least one year of full residency. They were of six total Brewers to earn honors and join 40 others from around the conference.
- Vassar won last year's meet against Trinity, 145-125, after pulling away in the matchup's final events. Jonah Strand finished with two victories that day, coming in first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.75) and second in the 200-yard individual medley relay (2:04.92).
- Jonah Strand leads the Brewers in four individual race categories thus far: 200-yard breaststroke (2:12.00), 100-yard breaststroke (59.59), 200-yard individual medley (2:01.12) and the 400-yard individual medley (4:34.69).
A Look At The Trinity College Bantams
- The Trinity College men's swimming team begins a loaded January schedule versus Vassar, as one of its five meets of the month.
- The Bantams look to open the new year on a strong note after suffering three straight setbacks with collective losses to Hamilton (166-124), at the Wesleyan Connecticut Cup (fourth of four teams) and at Bates (155-91).
- Senior tri-captain Nick Celestin is coming off a career meet against Bates after winning the butterfly, backstroke and IM races over 100 yards, setting school records in the 100-yard fly (51.18) and the 100-yard IM (54.40).
- Freshman Nick Kostic, junior tri-captain Doug Curtin and senior tri-captain Carl Gibney also swam well at the meet. Kostic won the 500-yard freestyle (4:53.29) and came in second for the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.10), Curtin claimed second in both the 50- and 100-yard backstroke and Gibney had a 23.38 time for third-best in the 50-yard freestyle.
