Rebecca Andrews (Los Altos, CA/Los Altos) made her first career goal a memorable one, scoring the game-winner in overtime to push Vassar to a 2-1 victory over New York University on September 5. It was a back and forth thriller at Gordon Field, with Vassar coming out on top in the 106th minute with the golden goal.
A Look at the Colonials: Western Connecticut has gotten out to a solid start in 2015, coming into its matchup with Vassar 3-1 on the season. After falling to Farmingdale State 2-0, WCSU defeated Western New England (2-0), RPI (2-1) and Buffalo State (2-1) over the past week. The Colonials went 14-5-2 overall last season, advancing to the Little East Conference Semifinals before falling to Keene State on penalty kicks.
West Conn produced a pair of LEC Players of the Week on Monday in senior Camile Lawson and sophomore Autumn Sorice. Lawson, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year was named the Defensive Player of the Week in the Little East after anchoring a defense that allowed just four goals. She also assisted on a Colonial score against RPI. Sorice was key as the Colonials opened the season 3-1, netting a score in each win. She also assisted on WCSU's additional goal against Western New England to total seven points on the week.
Against West Conn All-Time: Vassar is 2-7 all-time against Western Connecticut, but came out on top when the teams met last season at Vassar. Then sophomore
Emily Krebs (Newport Beach, CA/Corona Del Mar) scored one of the team's three goals in the 3-0 shutout.
In the Record Books: Senior goalkeeper
Emma Nichols (Lexington, MA/Lexington) enters the season inside the top-10 all-time in several statistical categories. Nichols began 2015 ranked first in career goals against average (minimum 1500 minutes) with a mark of 0.63 in 29 career games. She is also second in save percentage (.895), seventh in shutouts (6), seventh in wins (12) and ninth in total saves (119). A handful of other Brewers will see opportunities to crack into all-time lists as the season progresses.
Going Over: Vassar's overtime contest with NYU was the first extra-time game for the team since tying Bard 1-1 last season on October 28. The Brewers went 0-0-3 in overtime games last season, last winning an OT game with a 2-1 victory against Union College on November 2, 2013.
Freshmen Firepower: The class of 2019 came to play against NYU, as both goal scorers were freshmen in a big 2-1 double overtime victory. Freshman
Audrey Pillsbury (Laguna Beach, CA/Laguna Beach) buried her first collegiate goal in the 35
th minute, while
Rebecca Andrews finished a beautiful header in the closing minutes of overtime to break the tie against the Violets.
Defending Gordon: Vassar was fantastic on the natural grass surface of Gordon Field last season, finishing undefeated at home with a 6-0-2 record. The Brewers allowed just one goal at Gordon, while scoring 14 over the course of eight games. After beating NYU, Vassar now holds a nine-game unbeaten streak at Gordon.
Season Debuts: 17 different players saw the field for Vassar in the season opener against Mt. St. Mary (NY) on September 2, including seven freshmen making their collegiate debuts.

Lucy Brainerd (Littleton, CO/Heritage) will serve as the squad's team captain for the 2015 campaign.
Geography Lesson: Vassar's 2015 roster features student athletes from 13 different states and the District of Columbia. The most populous is California, with seven players hailing from the Golden State, while Massachusetts is second with four Brewers.
On to the Next One: Vassar will return to the pitch this weekend to compete in the Stevens Engineering Cup in Hoboken, NJ. The Brewers will face the host Ducks on Saturday, September 12 at 12:30 pm, before battling Whitman College the following day at 12:30 pm.
