Photo GalleryPOUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 4, 2015) – The Vassar College field hockey team moved into the title match of the 27
th Annual Betty Richey Tournament Friday evening, earning the berth with a 3-0 shutout of Smith College in action from Weinberg Field.
With the win, the Brewers (2-0) earned a spot in the championship game Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m., as VC tries to earn back-to-back Betty Richey Tournament titles for the first time in the 27 year history of the tournament.
Vassar College started strong and had plenty of chances in the first half, but Smith (0-1) keeper Nora Demick was up to the challenge. The senior keeper for the Pioneers made nine first-half saves to keep the visitors in the contest.
VC finally broke through right before the half at the 33:18 mark of the contest, as freshman
Alyssa More (Wilmington, DE/Mount Pleasant) netted her first career tally to put VC up 1-0. On the play, senior
Bianca Zarrella (Leominster, MA/Leominster) tipped a cross to the back post, where More slotted to the left of Demick for the tally.
At the intermission, Vassar held a 16-2 edge in shots as well as a 8-2 lead in penalty corners. Following halftime, the Brewers doubled their lead less than 10 minutes into the period as freshman
Megan Caveny (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) tallied her second goal of the year with help from senior
Lauren Wiebe (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker).
Just 4:47 later in the half, Vassar added to its lead, as junior
Emma Bracken (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams) made a nice run to the left post and
Lauren Shumate (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) fed a perfect ball to her for the easy tap-in into the empty cage. That was all the offense would need, as Vassar held Smith to just five shots in earning its second straight shutout to start the year.
VC outshot the Pioneers handily with a 24-5 spread, while accumulating 11 penalty corners to the five from Smith College. Demick finishing with 13 stops in the cage for the Pioneers, while freshman goaltender
Paige Amico (Carlsbad, CA/La Costa Canyon) stopped three shots on the contest. Amico also moved into No. 4 all-time on the Vassar shutout list with her second clean sheet in as many games.
Vassar will take on the winner of the William Paterson University and Manhattanville College contest Saturday afternoon in the title match, while Smith will battle the loser of that game at 1 p.m. in the Betty Richey consolation game.
