Vassar Rolls Past Siena, 63-0

- Head Coach Tony Brown

LOUDONVILLE, NY (September 27, 2015) – On a sun drenched New York state fall day just outside Albany, on the beautiful Siena College campus, the Vassar Women put together an 11-try performance to dominate their opponents. The hosts joined the conference this year and have had a rough start facing Rutgers and Vassar in consecutive weeks. The Siena Women did a good job of ripping the ball away at times and had a few forays into the Vassar half but the result was never in doubt given the minimal amount of possession they earned.

Vassar College Women 63 v 0 Siena College Women

Tries: Jyen Yiee Wong (1), Taylor Nunley (2), Lauren Workman (1), Darienne Jones (3), Laila Blumenthal-Rothchild (1), Anne Fritzson (1), Nathalie Freeman (1), & Molly Osborn (1).

Cons: Mary-Margaret McElduff (4).

The Vassar forwards will be pleased with their rucking and game shape but not too happy with kick-offs. Initially, there were jitters and players seemed to be out of sync but gradually as the first half wore on there was more pattern and control.

Darienne Jones and Nathalie Freeman were always in the thick of the action and generated good go forward ball. Taylor Nunley as well was direct and purposeful. In the backs it's a rare day when Cierra Thomas doesn't score but she cut through the Siena defense regularly and it served to get the team on the front foot.

The issue for Vassar is that they need to be able to play well when the opposition has the ball and unfortunately they were not tested again today. So the important thing is that players must push themselves harder in practice and set higher standards of performance. The good news is that the Vassar rookies are quickly going to be able to challenge hard for places and that might just be the missing ingredient to the recipe.

Next week: Sunday October 4th, 2015 versus the University at Albany - Kickoff 2:00 p.m.

Vassar College Women "B" 36 v 5 Siena College Women "B"

Tries: Rachel Elson (2), Michelle Urrutia (1), Oshana Reich (1), Elaina Peterkin (1), & Kayla Lightner (1).

Cons: Michelle Urrutia (3).

A stop and start game for the first half sprang into life in the second period of play as the Siena rookies eventually went down for the count. Vassar led 12-5 at the intermission with just Rachel Elson's score in the bank. But freshman Elson scampered and hopped over for a second try, in her now distinctive manner, and inside center Michelle Urrutia also bagged one to put the Brewers out of reach at 19-5.

The forwards were far superior in the loose at the breakdown and ball placement was generally good. In fact the team caught the kick-offs and definitely bettered their starter peers in this category! Freshman lock Oshana Reich went blistering down the field to score her first Vassar try. She was followed by Elaina Peterkin (Amtrak!) who left the station and arrived at her destination after a quick penalty tap was taken and the ball passed to her.

The scoring was rounded out by center Kayla Lightner. A much deserved try for she has worked hard to learn the game.

All in all it was a good day at the office for this team that has now scored 15 tries in 2 games this fall.

Team: 15 Makena Emery 14 Rachel Jones 13 Kayla Lightner 12 Michelle Urrutia 11 Megan de Koning 10 Rachel Elson 9 Jennie To 1 Lauren Workman 2 Andrea Ramsay 3 Elaina Peterkin 4 Miranda Scarlata 5 Oshana Reich 6 Catrina Tellez 7 Marron McConnell 8 Claire Fondrie-Teitler. Subs: Mariah Ghant for Lauren Workman.
