Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia) chalked up a team-high 17 digs as the Brewers opened the 2015 season with a three-set win over Rutgers-Camden in non-conference play from the Athletics and Fitness Center.
The Brewers earned the win with scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 26-24. VC (1-0) and the Scarlet Raptors were pretty close statistically, but the Brewers benefitted from 11 service aces to just one of host Rutgers-Newark (0-1). Vassar was also stout defensively, holding their Wednesday opponent to just .010 (24-23-103) hitting on the night.
Balance was key for the attack of Vassar, as junior hitter
Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) paced the squad with seven kills. Miller also stuffed the stat sheet with a team-best three service aces while accumulating 10 digs and two blocks. Her 10 digs marked her 17
th career game with double-digit digs, and her first in the past 15 matches.
Freshman
Devan Gallagher (San Francisco, CA/Urban School of San Francisco) finished her first collegiate match with six kills, while sophomore hitter
Alex Sams (Anthem, AZ/Beverly Hills) chalked up six kills on 15 swings. Newcomer
Bria Corham (Kansas City, MO/Montville Township) also added six terminations in her first career outing with the Brewers.
Freshman setter
Annie MacMillan (Colorado Springs, CO/Coronado) had an all-around solid contest for the Brewers with a team-best 11 assists to go with two aces and seven digs, and fellow setter sophomore
Sophia Tiajoloff (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) dished out 10 helpers as well. Hallum played all three sets to earn her team-best dig total of 17.
Brooke Hassan posted six kills, 16 assists and 13 digs to pace the Scarlet Raptors, while Erin Thompson posted a match-best of 21 digs.
Vassar will open its home slate Saturday with a tri-match with visiting University of New England and Lehman College, starting at 11 a.m. in Kenyon Hall in Poughkeepsie, NY.
