NEWBURGH, NY (September 2, 2015) – Senior Melissa Guillemette scored the game's only goal in the 71st minute, as Mount Saint Mary College (NY) bested Vassar 1-0 in the squad's season opener Wednesday evening. Despite holding a 10-6 advantage in shots in the match, the Brewers could not put one away as VC now moves to 0-1 on the year. MSMC improves to 1-0 with the victory.
Neither team could find the net in the first half, as both defenses limited any consistent offensive production. Vassar held a slight 3-2 advantage in attempts at goal in the opening period, while both sides managed an even three corner kicks.
MSMC senior Melissa Maini nearly gave the Knights the lead in the 59th minute with a shot to the right corner of the net, but senior goalkeeper Emma Nichols (Lexington, MA/Lexington) made a diving stop to keep the game scoreless.
The Knights finally broke through in the final 20 minutes of play with a breakaway down the far side of the pitch. Maini found Guillemette, who hit a shot into the right side of the net to score the eventual game-winning goal. The Brewers would manage three more shots down the stretch, but the hosts held on, giving Vassar its first loss of the season.
The defeat snaps a 15-game winning streak for Vassar over the Knights, and is the first win for Mt. St. Mary in the series since October 13, 1993.
The Brewers will look to rebound this Saturday, September 2 at home against New York University. Kickoff at Gordon Field is slated for 1:00 pm.
